Edward Augustus Bowen was educated at home, at Dwight and Holbrook's School, and at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. At the age of seventeen he entered the employ of Fitch, Estee & Company, wholesale and retail stationers, of 3 Park Place, New York City, and after remaining with this firm for a year became a clerk in the office of Robinson & Ogden, brokers, of 4 Broad Street, New York City. Edward Augustus Bowen was educated at home, at Dwight and Holbrook's School, and at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. At the age of seventeen he entered the employ of Fitch, Estee & Company, wholesale and retail stationers, of 3 Park Place, New York City, and after remaining with this firm for a year became a clerk in the office of Robinson & Ogden, brokers, of 4 Broad Street, New York City. In the following year he entered, as a clerk, the employ of Jay Cooke & Company, bankers, of 1 Nassau Street, New York City, on the day on which this firm opened its New York office. He was with this firm for nearly three years. and then became junior partner in the stock-brokerage firm of Smith, Seaver & Bowen, of 8 Broad Street, New York City. At the end of the year, however, the partnership was dissolved, and Mr. Bowen joined with his father and brother, Henry E. Bowen, in purchasing The Brooklyn Daily Union. The Bowens sold this newspaper in the autumn of 1873, and thereafter Mr. Bowen did not engage in regular business, but spent his time in farming, in traveling in the United States and abroad, in genealogical research in New York City, New England, London, and Wales, and in such office work, for a few months at a time, as he saw fit to undertake. He usually spent his winters in Brooklyn, and his summer residence was at Woodstock. Mr. Bowen compiled a manuscript genealogy of the Aspinwall family of Brookline, Mass., the first part of which was published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, vol. 47, pp. 342-348 (July 1893), while the entire manuscript was deposited with the New England Historic and Genealogical Society. To the same volume of the REGISTER, pp. 453-459 (October 1893), he contributed an article entitled "Griffith Bowen of Boston," and in 1897 he published a more comprehensive genealogy of the Bowen family under the title "Lineage of the Bowens of Woodstock, Connecticut."
