Lawrence Hawes conducted the memorial services with Janine Nuckolls as organist and Doyle Carlson presenting special music. Casket bearers were Dean Walker, Jerry Lawton, Mel Shanda, Charles Fields, Charles Powell, and Bert McCullom, Jr. Honorary bearers were Guy Hamilton, Clarence Baker, George Beaty, John Lawton, Paul Fatka, and Denny Subbert. Interment was in the Paton Township Cemetery. Edward Bernard, son of Harry E. and Hilda (Netsch) Vaughn, was born January 6, 1922 at Logan, Iowa. He was raised north of Logan and attended and graduated from Logan High School in 1939. On August 6, 1941 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Ruth Benoit of Harlan. To this union three children were born. The couple lived at Logan and Hubbard before moving to the Paton community in 1952. Mrs. Vaughn preceded her husband in death in November of 1962. On July 15, 1966, he was married to Violet Ann Miers. The couple made their home in Paton where Bernard operated the D-X service station. Bernard died on July 11, 1967 at Churdan at the age of 45 years. He was a member of Jefferson Lodge No. 2306 B.P.O.E. Elks, and attended the First Methodist Church in Paton. Mr. Vaughn served as a 4-H leader for several years and was a member of the Town Council at Paton. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife, Violet Ann; his children: Karen (Mrs. Lyle Schurman) of Paton, Gary E. Vaughn and Debra Ann, both at home.
