Lankford came as a decided shock to many of his friends and acquaintances here, who had not been advised of the critical nature of his illness. The deceased was a native of this county, having been born about two miles from Pocomoke City, in the Lankford homestead, where he has since resided. Lankford came as a decided shock to many of his friends and acquaintances here, who had not been advised of the critical nature of his illness. The deceased was a native of this county, having been born about two miles from Pocomoke City, in the Lankford homestead, where he has since resided. He was 63 years of age and had been principally engaged in farming and the timber industry, in both of which occupations he achieved conspicuous success. He was one of the largest landowners and taxpayers in Somerset County, and owned quite a large number of farms, and was extensively engaged in growing early white potatoes for Northern markets. Mr. Lankford was an attendant upon the services of the Pocomoke Presbyterian Church, a member of the Masons, a director in the Bank of Somerset and the Peninsula Produce Exchange, and in politics an advocate of Democratic principles, having frequently been the recipient of positions of honor and trust at the hands of his chosen party and the people of Somerset County. He had taken an active interest in the affairs of the Democratic party in this county for the past quarter of a century, having, at different times been a member of the State Central Committee, delegate to the State Conventions of his party, president of the Board of Election Supervisors, County Commissioner, School Commissioner, his party's nominee for County Treasurer and, for one term, represented Somerset County in the Maryland Senate, to which high office he was elected in the fall of 1923. Senator Lankford was a citizen of high character, wide personal popularity, and practical usefulness. While his passing will be a source of regret throughout the entire county, it will be especially felt in his home 'district, which his labors did so much to develop and to help. While The Marylander and Herald has not always agreed with the late Senator politically, we have always recognized his sterling qualities and high integrity as a man, and we now join with his legions of friends and admirers in all parts of Somerset County in expressing our sympathy for the members of his immediate family in their hour of grief, as well as those who through their daily contact and intimacy with Mr. Lankford learned to love the man for his sincerity. honesty, and high standard of his duty as a citizen, friend, father and advisor.
