Lucke, prominent business man of LeMars died in Chicago Thursday evening, after a sickness of many years. Death followed an operation which was successful, but Mr. Lucke was too weak to recover from the operation. Deceased has been troubled with ulcers of the stomach for many years, and was failing in health rapidly. Deceased was born on August 28, 1866, at Waukon, Ia. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Lucke. In 1877 he and his parents moved to a farm near Schaller, Ia. Mr Lucke worked on his father's farm for several years and then went to Galena, Ill., where he attended the Gallena college. From there he came to LeMars and went to Western Union college, known at that time as the Northwestern Normal school, under the direction of Prof. J. Wernli. He came to LeMars alone. He met Miss Anna Werli in LeMars, daughter of Prof. and Mrs. J. Wernli, to whom he was married on October 20, 1903. He was married in LeMars by Rev. G. E. Kiehnle, an uncle of his bride. To this union three children were born, who all live to mourn his loss, with his beloved wife. The children are: Frances, Homer and Bob, all living at home. Five sisters and one brother also survive, who are: Dr. P. P. Lucke, of LeMars; Mrs. Will Schafer, of Schaller, Ia.; Mrs. Charles Remer, of Baradale, Wash.; Mrs. Charles Fernberg, of Moskow, Idaho; Mrs. Charles Sissel, of Spokane, Wash., and Mrs. C. J. Woodke, of LeMars. Thirty-three years ago he started to work for Emil Laux at the Laux Grocery company. He started as a clerk and later formed partnership with Mr. Laux. Last year he purchased Mr. Laux's part and the firm went under the name of E. C. Lucke grocery company. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the St. Paul's church, Rev. S. C. Steinbrenner officiating. Burial was made in the LeMars cemetery. Mr. Lucke had many friends in LeMars and was a great booster of this community. Lucke, Prominent Merchant , Passes Away at Hospital in Chicago E. C. Lucke, prominent Le Mars business man and widely known in local circles, died in a hospital in Chicago Thursday evening following an illness caused by internal ulcers. Mr. Lucke recently underwent an operation for relief and was believed to be recoving, and the news of his death came as a shock to the community. Few were aware that he had suffered from an internal malady for several years as he was actively engaged at his work up to a short time ago, when he went to Chicago to consult expert physicians. Edward C. Lucke was born at Waukon, Allamakee county, August 6, 1866. When he was eight years old his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Lucke, moved to Sac county. He resided on a farm with his parents until he was 21 years of age and spent a year at college in Galena, Ill. From there he came to LeMars and attended the Northwestern Normal school, now Western Union college. He entered the employ of Emil Laux and shortly afterwards formed a partnership with him. The firm of Laux & Lucke prospered and last year Mr. Lucke bought out Mr. Laux's share and the firm became the E. C. Lucke Grocery company. In 1898 Mr. Lucke was married to Miss Ida Schott, of Charles City, who died in 1900. He was united in marriage with Miss Anna Wernli, October 20, 1903. He leaves to mourn his death his wife and three children, a daughter, Frances, and two sons, Homer and Robert. He is also survived by one brother Dr. P. P. Lucke, of LeMars, and five sisters, Mrs. C. J. Woodke, of LeMars; Mrs. Wm. Schaefer, of Schaller, Ia.; Mrs. Chas. Remer, of Green Acres, Wash.; Mrs. Chas. Steinberg, of Moscow, Idaho, and Mrs. Chris. Fissel, of Spokane, Wash. One sister, Mrs. Eva Laux, and two brothers, Theodore and George, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Lucke, preceded him in death. Mr. Lucke had many friends in Le Mars and vicinity and was active in business life and community affairs. He served on the city council as alderman at large and took a healthy interest in all things pertaining to the betterment of the city. He was a member of St. Paul's Methodist church, and of its kindred societies and devoted much time to religious work and activities. The funeral was held Sunday and was attended by a large number. Rev. S. C. Steinbrenner paid a fitting tribute to the memory of the dead man. The pall bearers were six brother-in-laws, C. E. Haas, Chas. Paul, Charles, Louis, Herman and Otto Wernli. The music at the funeral services was rendered by members of the family, Mrs. Clarence Roseberry, Mrs. L. Schaefer, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Haas, and H. D. Haas. Relatives and friends from out of town who attended the funeral are: Mrs. Phil Walker and Ed Schaefer, Schaller; Herman Wernli, Minneapolis; Louis Wernli and Mr. and Mrs. A. Sadler, Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Livingston, Paullina; Mrs. L. Schaefer, Fort Dodge.
