The founder "heard [a] pastor tell a parable about the good that came from woodmen clearing away the forest to build homes, communities, and security for their families." "The tools to clear those forests were adopted as symbols for the organization – axe, beetle (mallet [sledgehammer or maul]) and wedge – symbolizing industry, power and progress." "[A]n early program that lasted until the late 1920s, was to provide a marker for each member upon their death.
