HOLTON, RETIRED TECH HIGH TEACHER, IS DEAD Pioneer Machine-Shop Instructor Held National Record for Service When He Retired Edward Ellsworth Holton of 11 Florida street, who taught machine shop practice at Technical high school from 1903 to 1930 and won the distinction of being the nation's oldest trade school instructor in point of service, died at his home yesterday at the age of 80. Aside from the service record he established before his retirement 10 years ago, Mr. Holton also won wide acclaim as the author of the first text book ever written on shop mathematics. He also wrote three other text books, "Vocational Arithmetic," "Applied Algebra and Trigonometry," and "Outline of Machine Operations," which are still widely used in schools throughout the country. Born at Winchester, N.H., the son of Henry and Almira (Clark) Holton, he had lived in this city for 60 years. For awhile he attended Wesleyan academy, now known as Wilbraham academy, but left in the middle of his course to learn the trade of tool-make at Smith & Wesson. Later he returned to school and finished the course, teaching mechanical drawing at the same time...[obit continues with details about his career] Mr. Holton leaves his widow, Mrs. Mary (Morton) Holton; two daughters Mrs. Allan A. Cushman of Stratford, Ct. and Miss Charlotte M. Holton of this city; and one son Robert E. Holton of Enfield, Ct. and three grandchildren. Private funeral services will be held at the Dickinson-Streeter parlors. Christian Science services will be conducted by First Reader Donald Lane.
