Description	:	CUMBERLAND — Edward Eugene Gunning Sr., 76, of Cumberland, passed away on Tuesday morning, June 1, 2004, at his home. Born Dec. 6, 1927, in Morgantown, W.Va., he was the son of the late Eugene Thomas Gunning, the long-time sports editor of the Cumberland Times News and Mary Antoinette (Fricker) Gunning. He was preceded in death by a son, William Lawton Gunning Sr., April 26, 2004; and a grandson, William L. Read More	CUMBERLAND — Edward Eugene Gunning Sr., 76, of Cumberland, passed away on Tuesday morning, June 1, 2004, at his home. Born Dec. 6, 1927, in Morgantown, W.Va., he was the son of the late Eugene Thomas Gunning, the long-time sports editor of the Cumberland Times News and Mary Antoinette (Fricker) Gunning. He was preceded in death by a son, William Lawton Gunning Sr., April 26, 2004; and a grandson, William L. Gunning Jr. Mr. Gunning was a graduate of Saint Patrick's Elementary School and LaSalle High School. He was a member of the 1943-1944 LaSalle Championship Basketball Team that recorded 21 straight wins losing only to Keyser High School in their final games by one point. The team went onto a championship victory in the Newport Tournament in Newport, R.I. He was also a member of the 1944-1945, LaSalle Championship Basketball Team and named to the Cumberland All-City Team for which he received the Knights of Columbus Sportsmanship Award for that year. After serving his country in the United States Army, he graduated from Washington College in Chestertown, in 1951, where he was also named the team basketball captain in 1950-1951, and then began his life long interest and career as a restaurateur. He and his wife owned and operated Ferdinand's Drive-In and Mr. Ed's Restaurant and briefly the Hill Top Inn before retiring in 1981. Mr. Gunning is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jeanette Estelle (Sloan) Gunning; his son, Edward E. Gunning Jr., Tampa, Fla.; his stepson, James A. Whitten and his wife Audrey, Tampa; his stepdaughter, Debra Ellen Norris, Tampa; three granddaughters, Lindsay Farris, Cumberland, Brittany Gunning, Cumberland, and Shannon Gunning, Cumberland. Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., (formerly Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A.), 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, ( www.adamsfamilyfuneralhome.com) on Thursday, June 3, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be conducted at the funeral on Thursday, June 3, 2004, at 8:45 p.m. with Deacon Frank Werner officiating. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of Saint Patrick, on Friday, June 4, 2004, at 10 a.m. with Father Milton Hipsley as celebrant. Pallbearers will be John Cox, Gary Guyer, Jim Collins, Mike Blake, Wally Harper, and Bob Mattingly. Honorary Pallbearers will be John Esposito, Joe Helmstetter, and Joe Wolfe. Interment will be at Maryland Veterans' Cemetery at Rocky Gap. The family requests that memorials be made in his name to the WMHS Home Hospice Care Unit, c/o Nancy Valentine, 900 Seton Drive, Cumberland, MD 21502.
