Description	:	Edward E. Konicek, the third child and only son of Charles and Agnes (Yanda) Konicek, was born 1918, on the family farm northeast of Clutier in Township. He lived there for 56 years and then moved to Clutier in 1974. Edward attended Oneida Township No. 5 rural school and Clutier High School, graduating in 1936. Konicek, the third child and only son of Charles and Agnes (Yanda) Konicek, was born 1918, on the family farm northeast of Clutier in Township. He lived there for 56 years and then moved to Clutier in 1974. Edward attended Oneida Township No. 5 rural school and Clutier High School, graduating in 1936. He later served as the last secretary of the Oneida Township school district before it merged into Traer-Clutier and is now North Tama. Edward entered military service in June of 1941. He left for overseas service in May, 1942 with the First Armored Division. His military service was in the Mediterranean theatre of operations, which included the campaigns in Italy and North Africa. On returning to the United States, he was discharged in August of 1945. His wife Loretta (Kvidera) was born on the Kvidera family farm 5 miles northwest of Clutier in Carroll Township, the daughter of Frank M. and Elbie (Zmolek) Kvidera. Loretta received her education at Carroll No. 2 rural school in Tama County. They were married on September 14, 1948, in the Immaculate Conception Church in Clutier. After their marriage, the Konicek's began farming on the Konicek family farm in Oneida Township. The Koniceks discontinued their farming operations in January of 1966 when Edward went to work for Amana Refrigeration, Inc. For the next fourteen years, he worked in the sheet metal department retiring from Amana in January of 1980. Edward was a 49-year member of the Hora Machacek Post No. 453 of the American Legion. He served as the post's historian for 33 years, resigning that position in1993 because of failing health. In addition to local post offices, he served as a Tama County Commander and Third District Vice-Commander of the American Legion. Edward was a member of Voiture 568 of the 40&8 of Tama and Marshall counties and is a past Chef de Gare of that organization. Loretta was a full-time homemaker, but for a short time, she was employed outside of the home. During these years, she was also active in the American Legion Auxiliary. She is a past president of the local unit and a past Tama County Auxiliary president. She is also active in the Immaculate Conception Church Rosary Society and joined the Cedar Valley Polka Club in 1981. Edward served that chapter as treasurer and was treasurer for the Polka Club of Iowa for several years. They both had a favorite pastime of dancing oldtime polkas and waltzes and attended many polka fests throughout the midwest. The Konicek's were veteran travelers and had visited 49 of the 50 states, including trips to Mexico and Canada. They made two automobile trips to Alaska. Military service took Edward to 11 foreign countries on four continents. After retirement, Edward became interested in genealogy and compiled the genealogy of the descendents of Joseph, Sr. and Helena (Janda) Konicek. They were a pioneer couple, who came to America in 1871, and settled in Tama County. Edward was a great-grandson of that couple. In January of 1993, Edward was diagnosed with cancer and succumbed to the disease on October 30, 1993. Loretta continues to make her home in Clutier Submitted by Loretta Konicek
