Description	:	Edward F. Varney, 89, of Platte, SD passed away peacefully Monday, November 18, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society Home in Corsica, SD. Edward F. Varney was born on May 16, 1924 to Edmund and Helen (Koch) Varney in California where he attended school and grew up in the area of Thousand Oaks, CA just north of Los Angeles. Varney, 89, of Platte, SD passed away peacefully Monday, November 18, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society Home in Corsica, SD. Edward F. Varney was born on May 16, 1924 to Edmund and Helen (Koch) Varney in California where he attended school and grew up in the area of Thousand Oaks, CA just north of Los Angeles. He joined the U.S. Navy, enlisting in San Diego in 1942 and serving during World War II in the Pacific on a number of different ships, one being the J. Franklin Bell TAC transport where he saw action during the war. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in St. Paul, MN in 1946. Ed remained an active member of the American Legion and the VFW throughout his life. Ed moved to South Dakota in 1965 working with two of his brothers in the bee or apiary business. Ed married Marie Turgeon in 1966 and continued in the bee and honey business until 2005 when he started selling down the business. Ed and Marie resided in Platte during this time where they actively raised and showed quarter horses. They had two horses that earned many trophies and grand champion awards from the American Quarter Horse Association while showing and competing with their horses throughout the Midwest during those years. One horse, named Two-eyed Hill was named the AQHA Horse of the Year in 1975. Ed and Marie both had a love of horses as well as their cats and dogs over the years. Ed also developed a love of golf in his later years and spent much of his spare time either watching golf on TV or playing the game with some of his close friends at the Platte Country Club. He played golf up until the last year of his life. Ed and Marie enjoyed just cruising around the area in their Suburban and eating out. They were long-time members of St. Peter's Catholic Church. Ed is survived by: his wife, Marie; a brother, Edmund in Washington State; a sister, Edna Gibson in Utah; two daughters, Joyce (Mike) Fadness and Gail (James) Ramsey both from Arizona from a previous marriage to Clare (deceased) in California; Ed‘s grandchildren, Gregory and Tyler Fadness and Colin and Jill Ramsey. Also surviving are two nephews, Ronald Catlin of Pierre, SD and David Catlin of Westlake Village, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Edwin and Edgar "Bud".
