Benbow, one of Fremont township's best known citizens, died Tuesday, November 7, as the result of a fall from a horse Friday. Mr. Benbow had gone out to his field on the south farm, intending to plow, but the boys had hid his plow Halloween and being unable to find it, he was riding one horse and leading the other two and returning to his home, when the horses became excited by an automobile coming up from behind and started to run. At his own gate they either pulled or jostled him off and he fell, breaking his leg and inflicting internal injuries from which he died. Dr. J. P. Reynard. who was driving the auto says he first saw Mr. Benbow when within about three hundred yards or more and sounded the horn. The horses pricked up their ears but, Mr. Benbow gave no sign of hearing. When within about fifty yards of them he slowed up giving another alarm and the horses started to gallop. This was almost in front of Will Edwards home, where Dr. Reynard stopped so that he made no attempt to pass the horses. He did not learn of the accident for some little time and upon hearing of it, hastened to the Benbow home. Mr. Benbow was conscious and talked about the accident. Dr. Reynard is deeply grieved that he should be indirectly a cause of the accident, but it was one of those calamities that no one could foresee. Had the plow not been hid, there would have been no accident . Had the auto not been on the road at that time or had it been two minutes later it would not have occurred. But in the course of human events all things are dependent upon combinations of circumstances wholly or largely involuntary and never calculated, so that it is unjust to criticize except for willful neglect. It is a deplorable accident that ends a life of usefulness and takes from us a citizen of the highest type, and in their hour of sorrow, the family have the deepest sympathy of every one. Edward H. Benbow was born in Nauvoo, Illinois, April 28, 1844, died at Osceola, Iowa, November 7, 1911, aged 67 years, 6 months and nine days. He came to Iowa when a young man, and was married at Burlington, August 30, 1865, to Martha Rushing and settle in this county. To this union were born nine children, two sons and seven daughters, one daughter dying in infancy. The remaining eight children are all grown and were all present at the time of his death, to comfort the grief-stricken companion of almost half a century. Funeral services were held at the M. P. church at 2 p. m., Wednesday, November 8th, Rev. R. S. Tague conducting the services, assisted by Rev. Martin. Interment was at Maple Hill cemetery. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Bell of Burlington and Mrs. Scott of Salem. The children who survive are Jesse and Chester, Mesdames Anna Edwards, Ida Critchfield, Marian Hedrick, Alta Hunt, Laura Cobun and Miss Daisy.
