Description	:	Edward H. Thomas was born in 1928 in Lick Creek, in his grandfather's home, to Beauford Chambers and Shirley Howard Thomas, and died Jan. 30, 2009. He graduated from Scott High School, Madison. He enrolled in the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program at West Virginia University in 1945 and served in the U.S. Air Force in Germany as a cryptographic technician. He attended West Virginia Wesleyan University and, upon graduation, was ordained a Methodist minister and served throughout West Virginia for 15 years. He attended West Virginia Wesleyan University and, upon graduation, was ordained a Methodist minister and served throughout West Virginia for 15 years. Postgraduate work included Westminster Theological Seminary, Duke University and Emory College. He was co-founder and first director of Good Samaritan Council and Council of Southern Mountains, coordinator of field instruction and lecturer at the Community Action Training Center, a national training program for community action directors and executive staff at the University of Missouri. He was a director of Job Corps Project, AFL-CIO, serving nine states. He served as interim minister at First Methodist Church in Delano, Calif., executive director of South Central Farmers Committee and South Central Political Action Committee in Delano, Calif., chairman of Agricultural Action Committee for the state of California, director of California Rural Crime Prevention Task Force and a member of California Agricultural Personnel Management Association, Food Industry Association Executives, Labor Advisory Committee and the American Farm Bureau. He retired in 1990. He was a VISTA volunteer for the Office of the Aging, preparing taxes for 10 years. He wrote and published short stories for various publications. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Thomas of Bakersfield, Calif.; son, Frank Thomas of Hurricane; daughter, Shirley Thomas of Porterville, Calif.; brother, Jerry Thomas of Lick Creek; sister, Teresa Thomas of Van; grandchildren, Demian Baldwin, Krista Thomas and Zachary Thomas, all of Huntington; and great-grandchildren, Ashleigh, Nicole and Shae Baldwin of St. Charles, Mo. Ed will be missed by all the people whose lives he touched. The memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with the Rev. Tom Bias officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
