Funeral services were held from Saint Michael's Church, Wheaton, Kansas, Rev. Fr. Gerard Hart officiating assisted by Rev. Fr. Gervase Burke, O.S.B. Burial in Saint Joseph's cemetery, Lillis. As a boy of six years, accompanied by his widowed mother, a sister, Mrs. Thos. Nolan, three brothers, Patrick, James and Michael (now deceased) he came to Leavenworth, Kansas, in the year 1856. In 1863 his people immigrated farther west, now Lillis, Kansas. Sixty years ago he united in marriage to Margaret Reardon and for many years resided on a farm near Laclede, Kansas. To this union were born seven children. Etta, the oldest, died at the age of three years. His wife and six children, Mrs. Bertha Bennett, Mrs. M. J. McGrath, Mrs. Margaret Keating, Anna, Edward and Robert of the home survive; also thirteen grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. As a boy of ten he was a passenger on the first railroad excursion on Kansas soil from Elwood toward Wathena, April 1860. The engine was about the size of the present day tractors and can still be seen at St. Joseph, Missouri. While a student for two years at the Mission school of St. Marys, he witnessed many of the freight trains on the old Santa Fe Trail drawn by slow motion ox teams to points in the distant, Denver, Fort Laramie, etc . Many interesting pioneer experiences could be enumerated with its disadvantages and hardships and also the real frontier hospitality. They had no beautiful cities, graded highways or crops to break the monotony of the rolling prairies covered by bunch grass, swept by blizzards in winter and scorching winds of summer. How unappreciative the people of modern times are to this sterling group of humanity (of which he was a member) who blazed the trail in real frontier fashion to lay the foundation for the future state. They should command our greatest respect. However we seldom hesitate to breathe a prayer of thanksgiving for the wonderful heritage they left us. Those of a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J. H. White, St. Louis, Missouri; Charles Corrigan, Margaret Keating. Coletta and Margaret Bennett, Kansas City and Mr. and Mrs. James Smith and children of Clifton, Kansas.
