Description	:	Edward J. "Joe" O'Brien, 80, 303 Ferguson Ave., died Monday morning in the Carter County Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness. Mr. O'Brien was a native of Rome, Ga., and a son of the late Edward J. and Agnes McCaffrey O'Brien. He came to Elizabethton from Birmingham, Ala. in 1923 with his father's construction company to build the first ten miles of U.S. 19-E. Mr. O'Brien was an avid baseball fan, and was long responsible for promoting professional baseball in Elizabethton. He was a city councilman from 1971-1977, and held numerous committee posts. Mr. O'Brien was a charter member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, and was recently honored by the church for his service. He was a member of the Elizabethton Kiwanis Club. Mr. O'Brien was a retired employee of Beaunit Fibers, where he worked as a cost accountant.
