Va., reported to the News Record Tuesday night that a predawn fire on Monday morning wiped out the lives of a Pendleton county man and his wife and five children in their one-room cabin at the foot of North Mountain 2 1/2 miles off the Harper Chapel and Cherry Grove road, and about 15 miles southwest of Franklin. Ed Lamb and his wife, Edna Lamb, and their five children, ranging in age from 2 to 12 years, burned to death when fire, thought to have originated from an overheated tin heating stove, razed the cabin and burned all the occupants before they could get from their beds. The children were: Elwood, 12; Floyd, 10; Jarrett, 8; Susie, 5 and Sam 3. Bodies Badly Charred: Only the charred bodies of Lamb and his wife were recognizable to Prosecuting Attorney Don Cunningham and Corporal W. L. Pratt, of the Franklin state police detachment who went to the scene and investigated. They determined no inquest was necessary. The funeral pyre was discovered about 11 o’clock Monday morning by Bard Wimer, who went to the Lamb house to deliver a load of wood. Wimer immediately notified Cunningham who, in company with Pratt, went to the scene. Children in Un-floored Room: The cabin of one room with a small offset, was reduced to ashes and the corpses of Lamb and his wife were recognized only by their size, in comparison with the other five bodies. All were in beds with the exception of the youngest child, whose body was found on the floor. Cunningham and Pratt theorized the child had rolled off the bed when the floor burned out beneath. Lamb and his wife and the two youngest children slept in one bed in the main room and the three other children slept in a bed in a small, unfloored offset. The scene of the tragedy is to the right of the road from Harper Chapel to Cherry Grove, and about 2 1/2 miles back. The nearest neighbors were the household of Mrs. Lulu Wimer, nearly a mile distant. Because the fire struck in the pre-dawn hours, no one saw the flames. The cabin is reached only by a trail. Buried in One Grave: While Wimer contacted Cunningham, two men, Lloyd Wimer and Clyde Rymer, arrived and threw water on the smoldering ruins, but the fire had long since did its work and nothing could be done but bring the remains from the hot ashes. The seven bodies were removed to the Wimer home, where they were taken in charge by Undertaker F.R. Brown, of Franklin. Plans were to bury all in one grave, the Times reported. (Because telephone service was disrupted, it was not learned here when the funeral was held.) Mrs. Lamb is said to have been a Miss Hedrick, from the Mouth of Seneca section of Pendleton county. Three of the children attended the graded school at Cherry Grove. The mountain cabin was the proper ty of Harper Hinkle. Besides the seven victims of the tragedy, a sixth child, Naomi, a girl of about 16, is said to be employed in Harrisonburg.
