Description	:	Edward L. “Jack” Shumaker, 90, formerly of 1911 Mowery Ave., died at 10:25 a.m. January 31, 2015, at Vista Woods Care Center. He was born October 24, 1924, in Ottumwa to Roy Edward and Mary Ruth Cooper Shumaker. He married Betty Arlene Carter on September 6, 1947. She preceded him in death on December 9, 2005. A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1943, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He worked 25 years for John Morrell and Co. until they closed in 1973. He then worked for Hormel, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. He sang in the John Morrell Chorus from 1947 to 1972. He participated as a soloist at many church and community events. Surviving are two sons, Terry Lee (Carolyn) Shumaker of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Rickey Eugene (Debbie) Shumaker of Potterville, Michigan; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a half brother, Glenn Shumaker of Texas. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Richard Shumaker; two brothers, William and Robert Shumaker; a sister, Wilma Hissem; two half brothers, Allen “Barney” and Merrill Merchant; and his faithful dog, Skipper. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. David Klanderman officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday; the family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
