Edward Lee Klopfenstein, age 82, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away Saturday, October 15, 2005, following a lengthy illness at Park View Care Center in Sac City. Ed was born on January 24, 1923, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the son of Joe and Rosa (Feitz) Klopfenstein. Both Joe and Rosa's families emigrated from Switzerland in the 1880's. They came to Iowa to escape religious persecution and to farm the rich river land in Southern Iowa. Joe died when Ed was 16. Rosa Ed, and his sister Ruth kept the farm running even through the Depression years. Ed went on to enlist in the Army and served during World War II. He earned the rank of Technical Sergeant. He went on to train soldiers heading overseas. He served in California, Texas, and Alaska. After the war ended, Ed worked for the R.E.C. and strung electric lines in Iowa and Nebraska. He met Eileen D. Irons in Lincoln, Nebraska and they were married December 24, 1950. To this union two children were born: Carol and Joe. After retiring from farming he and Eileen ran the ice cream shop in Early, and he was a herdsman for Boar Power. Ed was a fifty year member of the United Methodist Church in Early, Iowa. He enjoyed fishing and taking care of his lawn and garden. Survivors include his daughter Carol Gottsch and her husband Jim of Omaha, NE; and his son Joe Edward Klopfenstein and his wife Jennie of Des Moines, IA; his four grandchildren: Jeff and Amy Jo Klopfenstein and Matthew and Adam Gottsch; and his sister Ruth White and her husband Don of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Eileen.
