"Edward Lide Owens, 1876 - 25 Apr 1939 was an evangelist preacher. He is buried in the Owens Cemetery, and his is the only marked grave. He was married to Vady Jones and had the following children: i. Antonette Owens m. Walter McDonald ii. Lucia Owens* m. Wallace T. Gordon iii. Edward Brown Owens, II iv. Carl Owens." Other locals have confirmed seeing only one marker at the Owens Family Cemetery, but couldn't recall, and made no record, of the name or inscription. * [There is a Findagrave memorial for a Lucia O. Gordon (1908-1992) buried in Aiken County, S.C. The birth date is an approximate fit for this Lucia. This note is meant merely as a clue, since it seems a link should require further confirming evidence. -jcd] ---------------- The above quoted statement by the meticulous and distinguished Owens family researcher Danny K. Owens (deceased) conflicts with the death certificate in two ways. 1/ The birth date and age originally given on the death certificate have been overwritten - the original birth date of Jan. 28, 1879 was overwritten with 1880, and the original age of 60 was overwritten with 59. This seems to have been done by an official before the release of the document. The informant named on the death certificate was Mrs. Chas. Mims of Hamer, S.C. Edward Lide Owens had a sister, Katie Elizabeth Owens (1888-1974) who married Charlie Thomas Mims, and who was surely the Mrs. Charles Mims of Hamer who gave the information on the death certificate. It is unclear why the birth year and age was changed, or why neither of those dates matches dates stated by Danny Owens in the family history, presumably from the tombstone. But it is not unusual for a distraught relative to give incorrect dates, relationships, etc. upon being called to do so at a stressful time and with no record handy to rely on. It is also possible, even likely, that the tombstone merely gives the death date and an approximate age at time of death, thus no specific date of birth. Two different death dates are also given. The death certificate states Edward died on April 25, 1939, but the Owens book states the date of death was April 28, 1939. In this case the death certificate is undoubtedly correct, since it was recorded per the doctor's statement at the time of death. But old inscriptions on tombstones can be difficult to read, and the numbers 5 and 8 (and also 3) are sometimes mistaken for the other. 2/ His death certificate states he was buried at "Gapway" but there is no tombstone for Edward Lide Owens at the Gapway Church Cemetery. Statements by Danny Owens in his book tend to indicate that he either visited the Owens Family Cemetery and saw this marker, which he mentioned more than once in the book, or that someone who had visited it informed him. Since few errors are to be found in Danny's family history, and since death certificates are well known to often contain errors, including places of burial, it seems logical to accept the placement of the marker at the Owens Family Cemetery, which is located "at Gapway" as the community around the church is known. Other anomalies on the death certificate are: The name on the death certificate is hand printed in big block letters as "Eddie Lyde Owens" but every other item on the page is handwritten in cursive in a clearly different hand. Edward Lide's address as given on the death certificate was "Ludowici Ga." His place of death was Carmichael Township, Dillon County, S.C. And Dr. Branford of Dillon who attended Mr. Owens stated that Mr. Owens was "Dead on Arrival" and that he died of "Coronary Thrombosis". All of which tends to indicate Mr. Owens died of a heart attack on the train on a trip to visit his sister who resided in or near Hamer (a small town in Carmichael Township in Dillon County); that he was dead upon the train's arrival at the train depot in Hamer; and that the sister was called upon at this time of stress to provide his vital statistics.
