Description	:	US Congressman. He served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from South Carolina's 6th District from January 3, 1973 to January 3, 1975. He graduated from Clemson College in 1941 and later joined the Army Air Corps and served as a fighter pilot in the Pacific during the last part of the Second World War. He graduated from Clemson College in 1941 and later joined the Army Air Corps and served as a fighter pilot in the Pacific during the last part of the Second World War. After the war, he stayed in the reserves for one year and was discharged as a major. After his military service, he returned to his hometown of Florence, South Carolina and worked in various positions. He was elected as a Democrat to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1958 and served one term. In the early 1960s, he switched his party affiliation to the Republicans and was active in the state party. In 1972 he won the Republican nomination for the state's 6th District congressional seat and expected to face long-time Democratic incumbent John McMillan, but McMillan was defeated in the Democratic primary by the more liberal State Rep. John Jenrette. He went on to defeat Jenrette by nine points and became the first Republican to represent the district. He served in the House until 1975 after he was defeated by Jenrette in their 1974 election rematch. He also ran for the seat in 1976, but lost to Jenrette again. In 1978 he was the unsuccessful party nominee for Governor of South Carolina. In 1980 he tried again for his old House seat, but lost in the party primary to the eventual winner John Light Napier. He retired from politics after this defeat.
