The church was filled to overflowing with sorrowing relatives and friends. Rev. W. Fritschel officiated. Burial was at the Meservey cemetery. Edward Hartwig was born December 21, 1889, at Dows, Ia., the son of August and Wilhelmina Hartwig. In 1884, he moved with his parents to their new home on a farm southwest of Thornton and he had remained a resident of this community to the time of his death. In 1911, he was married to Leona Hafermann. Their married life was a happy one and was blessed with two children, Glen and Ruth. He was devoted to his family, and the early death of his son in 1943 was a heavy blow to him. Mr. Hartwig had been baptized in early infancy in the Evangelical church located near the home of his parents, and remained a faithful member of it until it was closed. In 1930 he was received into membership of St. Paul American Lutheran church by the act of confirmation. He was a faithful member. It was very seldom that he was absent from any service. He was a regular attendant at the Adult Bible class after it was organized a few years ago. He was repeatedly elected to office in the congregation and was serving as deacon at the time of his death. In 1940 he had taken up his residence in Thornton. His physical condition had for some time made it difficult for him to do much work. He felt this keenly, but was always ready to render such service, especially to the congregation, as his condition permitted. His death came rather suddenly on Wednesday af6ternoon, October 8, at 5:20 p.m. after he had been seized by severe pains on Tuesday noon and taken to the hospital at Mason City where an operation had failed to relieve his condition. However, he was granted sufficient time to prepare for his death in a Christian manner, making peace with his fellowmen and receiving spiritual ministration from Rev. G. Myer of Rockwell. He died in peace, confident of his eternal salvation. His loss will be keenly felt in the community and within the congregation, about whose welfare he was so deeply concerned, and especially by the members of his family who survive him: His wife; one daughter, Mrs. Marvin Miller; the two grandchildren, to whom he was deeply attached; his brothers Neill, George, August and Otto of Thornton, Louis and Jessie Hampton; and his two sisters, Lena Buck and Mary Buck of Thornton. Two brothers, Henry and Albert, and one sister, Mrs. Bertha Althen, had preceded him into eternity.
