FUSS, UNCONSCIOUS SINCE WEDNESDAY, EXPIRES TRAMPLED UPON BY HORSES Team of Five Animals Frightened by Train and He Was Thrown Off a Wagon and Fatally Hurt – Leaves Family of Seven Children After lying unconscious since the accident of Wednesday morning in which he was seriously injured, Mr. Edward Meade Fuss, of near Emmitsburg, passed away early this morning. While his condition was critical, hopes were held out for his recovery until just before death came. Concussion of the brain and other injuries were the cause of his death. Mr. Fuss was hurt in an accident when his team of five horses hitched to a loaded farm wagon frightened at a train which was passing. At the time he was sitting on the "Jazy" board. The lead horses turned completely to the left, broke the tongue, and Mr. Fuss was caught in the dangerous position. It is supposed that he was knocked down and trampled upon while trying to control the horses. He was found in an unconscious condition in the road and later removed to the office of Dr. D. E. Stone, where every attention was given him. He could not be moved to his home. Besides his wife, Mr. Fuss leaves seven children, ranging in age from about 6 to 23 years, none of whom are married. Mr. Fuss was about 50 years of age. He was a well-to-do farmer and well known throughout the section in which he lived. He married a Miss Baumgardner, daughter of Moses Baumgardner of Carroll County. The deceased was a son of the late John Fuss. The Daily News, Frederick, MD – Wednesday, June 4, 1913 THROWN FROM TEAM WHEN HORSES FRIGHTEN AT TRAIN Edward M. Fuss, of Near Emmitsburg, is Badly Injured in Accident Today. Thrown from the farm wagon loaded with lime which he was driving, Edward M. Fuss, a well-known farmer residing about 1-1/2 miles from Emmitsburg on the Taneytown road, was seriously injured this morning and is now in a critical condition. The horses frightened at a train which was passing and became unmanageable. He suffered a concussion of the brain and at an early hour this afternoon had not recovered consciousness. Mr. Fuss was hauling lime to his farm and was proceeding along the state road between Emmitsburg and Frederick when the accident occurred. It is stated that the lead horses started around in the opposite direction, and Mr. Fuss was caught and badly squeezed and thrown to the pike. Shortly after the accident, he was picked up, and Dr. D.E. Stone of Emmitsburg summoned. The unconscious man was removed to the office of Dr. Stone, and his condition was such that it was deemed inadvisable to remove him to his home. Dr. Thomas B. Johnson, of Frederick, was also called later. Mr. Fuss' injuries are of such a serous nature that his recovery is despaired of. He has a wife and seven children.
