Julie Marie Phillips in 1923. ======================================================== Source: Manchester Press, Thursday, October 28, 1926, pg. 2, col. 1 GREELEY Edward Nathan Torrey died at his home in Greeley on Sunday morning, Oct. 17, 1926. He was born at Millville, Iowa, Aug. 17, 1873, and his early boyhood was spent in this vicinity, receiving his education here. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Torrey, his mother dying while he was a small boy. On Aug. 18, 1897, he was married at Millville to Miss Mary Moser. To this union were born eight children, two of whom died in infancy. After his marriage Mr. Torrey moved with his bride to a farm just west of Greeley, where they resided until 1906, when they returned to a farm near Millville. There they lived until the death of the wife Dec. 11, 1917, when the remainder of the family came to Greeley. On June 23, 1923, Mr. Torrey was married to Miss Julia M. Phelps at Pana, Ill. During his residence here Mr. Torrey was (relatively?) interested in the welfare of the town. For several years he was a member of the town council and for the last four years had served as mayor, which office he held at the time of his death. He was a member of Tadmor(?) lodge, No. 225, A.F. & A.M., and of the local O.E.S. Always a man of robust health, the death of Mayor Torrey after an illness of only a few weeks' duration came as a great shock to his family and friends. He was only 53 years of age, but had made an indelible impression upon many lives. Temperate in his personal habits and honest at all times in his business he stood high in the estimation of those who knew him. Those best acquainted with him knew him as a loving father and loyal husband. During his last days his thoughts were always of those around him, and he patiently bore his illness without a word of complaint, feeling from the first that the Heavenly Father was calling him home. Mr. Torrey is survived by his aged parents, his wife, a sister, Mrs. Henry Wathen of Morrill, Neb., two brothers, Milnus (sp?) of Morrill, Neb., and Earl of Dubuque, three half sisters and a half brother, and six children - Mrs. Randall Kinyon of Millville, Henry J. and Mrs. Arnold Muller of Guttenberg, and Beulah, Joy and Donald of Greeley. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon from the M.E. church, the Rev. Herbet Temple officiating, the Masonic order participating. Interment was made in the Bolsinger cemetery.
