Description	:	MARYLAND Edward was born the son of Benjamin Richards and Ann Merryman in old Baltimore County Maryland, most likely near present-day Cockeysville. Edward's father, Benjamin, and grand-father Edward, had moved to that area from Dorchester County Maryland in 1729 to join the Gunpowder Friends/Quaker Meeting. He and son Benjamin [1710] MD, along with Isaac Wright, would establish a Friend's meeting on the Maryland frontier in what would become the town of Hampstead MD. TO VIRGINIA Edward's father Benjamin left Maryland with his family to enter Virginia on April 27 1750. At age 19; Edward's name appeared on a tax roll for Lunenburg County VA with his father Benjamin. Eight years later, they appeared on newly forming Franklin County rolls. Edmund Hendley [1783] +Sarah Ann Warren A SOUTHERN PLANTATION Edward built up a good sized plantation from the year of 1758 through 1803. He grew crops, bred livestock, and had a mill 6.4 miles south south east of Rocky Mount VA [between Sydnorsville and Sontag]. His properties, totaling over 1,000 acres at their largest, were on either side of Chestnut Creek, as it is recorded on official documents held at the Library of Virginia. Edward's land purchases were: YEAR 1758: 80 acres for 15 pounds from Robert Hodges, late of Chesnut Creek, Halifax Co, planter 1769: 80 acres for 10 Shillings by King George of England. 1779: 230 acres for 25 Shillings by Thomas Jefferson, Governor of Virginia 1784: 252 acres for 1 Pound 5 Shillings by Patrick Henry, Governor of Virginia 1793: 150 acres by James Wood, Governor of Virginia; 1803: 22 acres by John Tyler, Governor of Virginia, 1803: 30 acres by John Tyler, Governor of Virginia; 1803: 233 acres by John Tyler, Governor of Virginia. REVOLUTIONARY WAR Edward enlisted on February 28 1778 during the Revolutionary War. PS (Patriotic Service) Non-Commissioned Officer VA, also Private, Drummer, Captain Thomas Bowyer, Major Jonathan Clark, Colonel James Wood, 4th, 8th, and 12th Regiments, furnished supplies, DAR #A095838, Edward was a fellow soldier with Charles Stewart, brother of his wife Elizabeth Hendley Stewart-Richards. SLAVERY Edward owned slaves, as was the custom of the time. 1782 Tax Levy Henry County [before it became part of newly-forming Franklin County] Richards, Edward 1 tithe 6 horses 27 cattle 1786 Tax Levy [1st for Franklin County] # Tithes: Whites [male] 4 Over 21: Whites [male] 1 16-21 [age]: Slaves 0 Over 16 [age]: Slaves 3 Under 16 [age]: 3 Horses: 7 Cattle: 20 NEIGHBORS AND FAMILY The Stewart family, along with John Harger, Elisha and Zachariah Warren [their land bordered Edward Richards' land], and Robert Hodges; lived as neighbors along Chestnut Creek in Franklin County. Robert Augustus Core Jones, who married Edward's daughter Susannah, owned land near Edward's father's land on the Settler's Map of Franklin County VA. These neighbors were friends, and gave their children in marriage to one another, sold and gifted parcels of land as wedding gifts. They no doubt worshiped together, as many of these were people of Christian faith. DEATH Edward died in 1812. His estate provided land, slaves, and cash gifts to his heirs. Oldest son Shadrack and youngest son Edmund were named executors of his will [those interested may enguire about his will as I have a copy. [Thanks, Dolly!]. HGR---a grateful descendant.
