Stabler, 102, Pioneer Druggist, Dies Edward R. ("Cap") Stabler, 102, a retired druggist who remembered seeing Robert E. Lee, died Monday at his home, 9505 Woodley avenue, Forest Glen, Md. Born in Lynchburg, Va., he saw the Confederate chief in church there during the Civil War. At 14, he moved to Sandy Spring, Md., where he lived until 1901, when he entered the family drug business in Alexandria. Mr. Stabler's grandfather, Edward, had founded an apothecary on South Fairfax street which sold George Washington his medicines. Know as the Stabler-Leadbeater shop at the the turn of the century, it was one of Mr. Stabler's many links with the past. He worked there until his retirement in 1929, when he and his wife, late Miriam Shreve Cutler, moved to their Forest Glen home. The three-quarter-acre plot was Mr. Stabler's pride and joy. Shortly after moving, and undeterred by blindness, he supervised the excavation of a 10-foot-long lily pond, planned the molds for the cement and filled the pond by hose until about 12 years ago, when he dug a 90-foot pipeline ditch. He also built a hand-railing on the front steps of his home, and did the same job for a druggist friend in Chevy Chase. Mr. Stabler loved to collect mementoes. His collection included at one time an original minature portrait of George Washington and shoe buckles which were allegedly worn by the general. He also owned a blue and white china platter used in the White House during President Madison's administration, and a note written by Dolley Madison to Mr. Stabler's grandfather, asking for castor oil. Mr. Stabler's 100th birthday in September, 1957, was celebrated by a large party of his neighbors and friends on his front lawn. He leaves a son, E. Kenneth ("Mike") Stabler of the home address, editor of the National Institute of Health Record. Friends may call at the Warner E. Pumphrey Funeral Home, 8434 Georgia avenue, Silver Spring, until 4:30 p.m. today. Funeral services will be held at the Forest Glen home at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery, near Brinklow, Md.
