R. Hill One of the old-timers of Alberta, and one of the most respected residents of Red Deer, passed away somewhat unexpectedly on Sunday evening at the age of 70 years, in the person of Mr. E. R. Hill. Mr. Hill had been in pretty good health of late years despite two or three bad spells, and came home on Saturday morning from the Edmonton Fair. He took sick on Saturday night and suffered severely all Sunday, being removed to the Municipal Hospital in the evening where he died fifteen minutes later, from a gangrenous condition of the stomach and bowels. Mr. Hill was born in New York state in 1856, going to Somerset, Engl., when his father returned there, and coming out in 1872 to Brantford, Ont., when his father and step-mother with their sixteen children settled in the dairy business on the Grand River. The deceased was married at the age of 20 to Mrs. Eveline Gould, and they and members of his father's family came out West, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Hill settling at the Blackfoot Reserve, Gleichen, where his first wife died; the late Mr. Hill and Mrs. E. R. Hill, formerly Miss Elizabeth Greenfield, of Owen Sound, Ont., were members of the Calgary Old-Timer's Association by virtue of having been over forty years in Southern Alberta. They came north to Innisfail and to Hill End district around 1894-5, and in 1907 Mr. and Mrs. Mill and their family moved to Red Deer which has been their home ever since. Beside Mrs. Hill, the sons are Ernest G., of Milnerton, Alta.; and Roland, late of Longview, Wash.; and the daughters, Mrs. H. Gulliver, of Lousana; Mrs. H. Cunningham, of Lethbridge; Mrs. C. H. Leppard, of Calgary; and Mrs. Lawrence Heath, of Oyen. A number of Mr. Hill's brothers and sisters are still living in Ontario and the West. Mr. Hill was connected for some seven years with the Piper Brick Co., and built and owned a number of houses in Red Deer. His warmest interest was in the work of the Baptist Church, of which he had been a member for fifty years, being senior deacon of the Baptist Church at Red Deer. He had also served with the Orange Lodge in Red Deer for some years, and had been a member of the City Council. Mr. Hill was a man of fine character and was always interested in the material and moral welfare of the town.
