(Ed) Collins, 85, of Marshall, died Monday, January 22, 2007, in the loving care of his family at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility. ---Ed was born on August 11, 1921, in Marshall, one of nine children of the late Wilkie and Ossie (Baker) Collins. ---The family lived in downtown Marshall, above the Schnaitman Meat Market in downtown Marshall. (Ed) Collins, 85, of Marshall, died Monday, January 22, 2007, in the loving care of his family at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility. ---Ed was born on August 11, 1921, in Marshall, one of nine children of the late Wilkie and Ossie (Baker) Collins. ---The family lived in downtown Marshall, above the Schnaitman Meat Market in downtown Marshall. Ed attended Marshall Schools. ---To help support his family, Ed went to work at age 11. He worked in local groceries owned by the Hillabrandt, Bliss and Zull families, also in the Shellenberger family's moving business. ---Ed learned at an early age the art of acquiring a tire from the Marshall Iron and Metal Scrap Yard. Ed and friends would then roll the tire around the block and present it to the knowing, but compassionate owner, Max Stulberg, who would pay Ed a nickel for the opportunity to buy that tire again. ---On Labor Day in 1929, Ed and a friend were playing in the alley near the Stagecoach Inn when he discovered a hole in the ground where a gasoline service station had been located. When eight-year-old Ed lit a match,t he explosion seriously burned his eyes. ---University of Michigan Hospital doctors predicted that Ed would never see again. His eyesight did return and since then he celebrated Labor Day as the day he "entered the gasoline business." ---On April 15, 1944, he married Freda J. Linton at Marshall First Presbyterian Church. She survives. ---After working at Eaton Manufacturing, Ed was employed at Carroll' Standard Service. He later purchased the business and ran it until 1965, when he sold it and joined Union Steel in Albion. ---In 1970, he opened Ed Collins Sunoco Service, retiring in 1980. ---Retirement was not for Ed. In 1981, he went to work at Felpausch Food Center, where he worked until 2002 when he was 81. ---From 1950 to 1960 he served as a volunteer firefighter with the Marshall Fire Department. ---He was a member of Moose Lodge 676. He enjoyed gardening, golfing, and hunting, especially deer, and participated in Turkey Shoots. ---Ed loved his children and grandchildren and other young people and taught many of them how to properly take care of their cars. He enjoyed time with many good friends, whether they were deer hunting, sipping a beer or playing cards. ---In addition to his wife, survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James E. and Elsie Collins and daughter Jan Collins, all of Marshall; grandchildren, Andrew J. (Jaime) Collins of Marshall, and Heather (Javan) Quackenbush of Blanchard; great-grandchildren, Caroline Collins, Lily Collins, Alicia Collins, and Sadie Quakenbush of Blanchard; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. ---Ed was also preceded in death by brothers, Alan, Dwight, Clare, Milo and Carleton Collins; and sisters, Ossie Derby, Marian King and Esther Ruddock. ---Funeral services were held on Friday at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home, with Rev. Seth Weeldreyer officiating and interment at Fairview Cemetery in Homer. ---Memorial contributions are suggested to First Presbyterian Church or Calhoun County Medical Care Facility Activities Fund. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Father: Wilkie and ]Collins.
