W. Stevens, a cousin, on Washington avenue. General Fagg, who visited Pulaski periodically and had many friends in this section, had been suffering for some time with angina and an enlarged heart. However, he recently visited Bristol and was seen daily on the streets, paying frequent visits to The Times office, being a close friend of all newspaper media. Due to frequent attacks, Gen. Fagg knew his end was near. He is said to have sensed the fatal attack early yesterday morning. Medical attention was given but he failed to rally as he had on many other occasions. In a letter written November 18, Gen. Fagg had left instructions for notifying relatives for his burial. Gen. Fagg's death caused more than passing interest in New York where he numbered his friends by the score. Several national leaders paid him tribute in yesterday's editions of Eastern papers. Only Monday he had received an autographed copy of the first edition of Vincent Astor's new publication of which he was very proud. During the last half century he had been personally acquainted with all the presidents of the United States except Wilson and Harding. While connected with the Queens Royal Hotel at Niagara, on the lake, in 1902, he knew the the Duke of York, now His Majesty King George of a England. On August 22 1930, during a visit in Washington, he was the luncheon guest of President Hoover at the White House, having known Mr. Hoover in California several years before. McKinley and Taft however were perhaps, friends ever in the White House as one of the greatest men we ever had but he was so jovial and easy going that many failed to recognize his great abilities. Taft, the only man to hold both offices of president and chief justice of the supreme court, was a big eater, according to General Fagg. He would eat more than any three men I ever saw in my life. President Franklin D. Roosevelt's acquaintance was made while the latter was still an official in New York state, and the hotels served by General Fagg, among them being the old Waldorf - Astoria in New York was still connected with it, to make way for the great Empire State building, Literary figures made up a distinguished circle of General's widespread ring of friend-ship. While in Atlanta in September he was entertain Joel Chandler Harris whose author-owner old he home, knew years ago. James Whitcorab Riley, "The Hoosier Poet," whose birthday is a holiday in Indiana at the suggestion several years ago of Fagg, was one of his closest friends. Twenty-one first editions af Riley's works, autographed by the author, are among the priceless treasures of material nature retained by the old hotel man. General Lew Wallace, Booth Tarkington, and others, he met through visiting frequently at the Riley homestead. Gen. Fagg was the son of Capt. George W. and Harriet Kirby Fagg, of near Christiansburg. He was one of seven children, five brothers and two sisters whom the following survive Mrs James Galloway, of Bluefield, Va; Jack Fagg of Welch, W. Va. and R. L. Fagg, of Roanoke. He received his title of general by virtue of his commission with organization of the Grand Army of the Republic and the sons of the Confederate Veterans which he took active part. He was a hotel steward for a long period of years, during which he is said to have served in 123 hotels in 34 states and in Canada, and in which capacity he came to number among his acquaintances persons of national and international. General Fagg was widely known throughout Virginia and in the sections. He had traveled extensively, was a frequent contributor to newspapers and took a deep interest in patriotic organization, whose connections was with the Old South. He had been pictured by Robert L.
