They seem to take a delight in laboring for the general advancement of a locality, while advancing their own interests. One such is Ed T. Austin, of the Hawkeye Printing Company, of Marshalltown. Mr. Austin was born in Clinton county, Ohio, January 30, 1862, and he is the son of Samuel J. and Eliza E. (Ashcraft) Austin, natives of Ohio, where they grew up, were educated and married and spent their early lives, moving to Marshall county, Iowa, in 1864, locating in Marshalltown. The father was a stationary engineer here, and well understood every phase of his work. He is now retired, but still maintains his home here. The son, Ed T., was two years of age when his parents brought him to this county and he grew to maturity and was educated in Marshalltown. Taking up the printing business when a boy, he worked in the old Times office, under Chapin & Sowers, later merged with the Republican into the Times-Republican. Then for a period of ﬁfteen years he worked in various ofﬁces in other cities, becoming an expert in the "art preservative" and giving the utmost satisfaction wherever he chose to work. He returned to Marshalltown in 1898 and established the Hawkeye Printing Company; He has met with continued success in this work, doing general printing of such a high grade that his patrons are constantly increasing. He has a modernly equipped plant, well prepared to turn out high grade work promptly. Mr. Austin is also interested in the Marshalltown Buggy Company, a well known concern. Politically, Mr. Austin is a Republican and was a member of the school board for a period of three years. Fraternally, he is a member of the following orders, and is popular in lodge circles: Marshall Lodge No. 108, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; Marshall Lodge No. 312, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; Cosmopolitan Lodge No. 38, Knights of Pythias; Marshall Tent No. 25, Knights of the Maccabees; Chippewa Tribe No. 40, Improved Order of Red Men; Poweshiekwai. Council No. 46, Degree of Pocahontas; Beeson Camp No. 385, Modern Woodmen of America; Iowa Castle No. 154, Royal Highlanders; Marshall Lodge No. 19, Home Guards of the World; Hawkeye Commercial Men's Association, and Typographical Union No. 414.
