Edward was born February 14, 1929, in Hays to Alex and Germaine (Pfannenstiel) Pfeifer. His mother died when Ed was 10 years old. Ed married Leona Wasinger on October 15, 1960 in Munjor, Kansas. Pfeifer, age 82, of Hays died Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at the Hays Good Samaritan Society in Hays, Kansas. Edward was born February 14, 1929, in Hays to Alex and Germaine (Pfannenstiel) Pfeifer. His mother died when Ed was 10 years old. Ed married Leona Wasinger on October 15, 1960 in Munjor, Kansas. Edward served his country for eight years during the Korean War. Fifty four months of those years he served as a Military Police Officer in Okinawa. Upon his return home, he served as the Ellis County Juvenile Officer. After that, he served as the State Parole Officer with his first assignment in the Lansing/Leavenworth area. He was then transferred as parole officer for the 17 Northwest Kansas Counties. He later served as a Court Services Officer working for Judge Flood until his retirement in March, 1991. After his retirement, he worked at the Holiday Inn and volunteered at Hays Medical Center. Ed was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church where he served as usher for 35 years and then ushered for funeral services when his health prevented him from ushering at the 10:00 Mass on Sundays. He was also a member of the American Legion of Hays and the Sunflower Chapter of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia. His most interesting hobby was playing the guitar with various bands until he formed his own band known as the "Eddie Pfeifer Band" until his health forced him to give it up. Another favorite thing he loved to do was play pinocle whenever he had some card players and he played three afternoons in a row just nine days before he died. Survivors include his wife, Leona of Hays; a daughter, Carol Harrison of Roland, Oklahoma; two grandchildren, Kayla and Josh Harrison; a sister, Mildred Dinges of Colbert, Oklahoma; two half brothers, Leonard of Pottsboro, Texas, and Jerry Pfeifer of Hanston, Kansas; a half sister, Norma Jean Ruder of Liberal, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents and step mother, Josephine Befort Pfeifer. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2012, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Burial with military services by the Hays American Legion will be in the St. Francis Cemetery in Munjor. There will be a parish vigil service at 6:15 p.m. on Friday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 until 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Memorials have been established with the St. Joseph Catholic Church of Hays, St. Francis Catholic Church of Munjor, Kansas, or the Sunflower Chapter of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia.
