He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Tampa. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Erwin, Emil, and Adolph; and a sister, Wilma Nunn. Survivors include his wife, Elaine of Herington; son and daughter-in-law, Evan and Tisha Backhus of Herington; four brothers, Herbert Backhus and Wilbert Backhus, both of Tampa, Harry Backhus of Leavenworth, and John Backhus of Enterprise; three sisters, Alma Meyer and Frieda Bentz, both of Tampa, and Ella Heidemann of Decatur, Ill.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at St. John Lutheran Church, Tampa, with the Rev. Clark Davis officiating. Burial was in the North Tampa Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established with the church.
