Description	:	Edwin C. Berkland, 91, of Brookings, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013 at his home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Friday, January 18, 2013 at Lake Campbell Lutheran Church, in rural Volga. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday at Rude’s Funeral Home, in Brookings. Edwin Conrad Berkland was born March 5, 1921 to Nels and Andrea Berkland at White River, Mellette County, South Dakota. In 1932 the family moved to Brookings County and settled near Lake Campbell. He attended grade school in District 90 and graduated from Brookings High School. After graduation he helped his father farm and worked for local neighbors. He served in the Army during WWII from 1942 to 1946. He was assigned to the 80th General Hospital Medical Core and stationed in the Pacific. Edwin was confirmed at Lake Campbell Lutheran Church and has been a lifelong member. He served the church by being a youth janitor and on the church council. In 1949 he married Lorraine (Messerschmidt) Eberlein of Brookings at Lake Campbell Lutheran Church. They farmed one year northwest of White, and then moved to a farm west of Volga for 6 years. They then bought a farm south of Volga, where they raised their family. Edwin truly enjoyed being a farmer and working on the land. In the fall of 2009 they moved into Brookings. They spent many winters in Donna, Texas. Edwin is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lorraine, of Brookings; four sons, Harold (Linda) of Brookings, Dale (Cheryl) of Volga, Glen (Sue Stryker) of Minneapolis, Virgil (Judy) of Pheonix; four daughters, Gladys (Doug) Kuipers of Platte, Phyllis (Mark) Pates of Volga, Alice (Andre) Kub of Rochester, Jane (Gene) Palmer of Sioux Falls; two sisters, Clara (James) Hansen of Buffalo, MN, Verna (Russell) Cochran of Rapid City; three sisters-in-law, Phyllis Berkland of Sioux Falls, Famie Berkeland of Lake City, MN, Marlys Berkland of Brookings; 18 grandchildren, 9 step grandchildren, 4 great grandsons, 8 step great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son Russell, a great grandson, four brothers, Norman (Evelyn), Orville, baby Olaf, Marvin, Harvey; three sisters, Sylvia (Earnest) Steen, Marie (Milton) Erickson, Helen (Keith) Meyer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to World Hunger. - Rudes Funeral Home
