Description	:	Edwin "Ed" Karssen March 21, 1926 ~ August 28, 2011 Mr. Edwin Karssen, age 85, of Alton, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2011, at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. There will be a funeral service on Friday, September 2, at 11:00am, at the Alton Reformed Church in Alton. The Rev. Roger Voskuil will officiate. Interment will follow at the Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Edwin was born on March 21, 1926, in Lismore, Minnesota, the son of Gerrit and Emma Gertrude (Beukelman) Karssen. He was raised at Lismore until 1932, when the family moved to Alton, where he graduated from high school. He then served in the United States Navy during World War II, after which he attended Westmar College in Le Mars. On June 26, 1951, he married Catherine Roghair in Alton. They made their home in Alton, where he worked at Hentjes Clothing for fifteen years. He then purchased that business, which became Ed's Shoe and Clothing. Catherine passed away on February 21, 1996, in Orange City. On April 21, 2001, Mr. Karssen married Neva Jean Bohlken Benton in Sioux City. They continued to make their home in Alton. He was a member of the Alton Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory as both an elder and a deacon, was Sunday school superintendent, and taught catechism classes. He also belonged to the Floyd American Legion Post in Alton. Ed was known as a collector of several things, and he liked going to Cutty's at the Iowa Great Lakes. In earlier years, he played on the Alton baseball team, and now he looked forward to attending and watching ballgames. Survivors include his wife of ten years; a son and his wife, Gary and Mary Karssen, of Omaha, Nebraska; a daughter and her husband, Nora and Gary Saxen, of Le Mars; a daughter-in-law and her husband, Rita and Calvin Van Essen, of Jasper, Minnesota; a step-daughter, Mary Jo Ruppert, of Cherokee; two step-sons and their wives, Robert and Carla Benton, of Punta Gorda, Florida; and Gary and Lori Benton, of Stillwell, Kansas; six grandchildren, Kara (David) Nelson, Greg (Kelsey) Karssen, Jennifer (Jason) Ester, Timothy Karssen, Catherine Saxen, and Elizabeth Saxen; nine step-grandchildren, Corey Van Essen, Christine (Darrick) Neugebauer, and Kyle Van Essen; and The Rev. Nathan (Jennifer) Lamb, Sara Lamb, Brian (Alisa) Benton, Kristin (Eric) McKinney, Kelli (Matthew) Bartlett, and Bryce (Charlotte) Benton; three great-grandchildren, Abigail and Tripp Ester and Adria Nelson; seven step-great-grandchildren, Dylan Luethje, Madeline and Sophia Benton, Layla and Piper McKinney, and Benjamin and Cooper Bartlett; and a brother and his wife, Peter and Dorothy Karssen, of Orange City. In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Dale Edwin Karssen; and a sister and her husband, Edith and Howard Van Roekel.
