Description	:	Edwin Forrest Hamlin was born on December 10, 1859 in Honesdale, Wayne, Pennsylvania. His parents were George Nelson Hamlin, who came to Pennsylvania from Connecticut with his parents as a child, and Delia Justin. Following his parent's divorce in 1865 and his father's remarriage to Lydia Hambly, he traveled with his father, step-mother, sister Caroline and half brother, Richard, to Nodaway County where his father built up a successful farm near Maryville. Neither Edwin nor Caroline had contact from this point with their mother, Delia Justin, who remarried Wells S. Hubbard, a Civil War Veteran, in 1866. Edwin, who never attended school but did learn to read and write. stayed on the Hamlin farm until after his father's death in 1907. He had never married but following his father's death and settlement of his estate, Edwin (known as Ed) married Vida Mae Manley on July 8, 1908. They moved to Maryville. One daughter, Virginia died in infancy in 1909. Another daughter, Helen, lived into the 1980's. Ed and Vida were very active in Masonic affairs throughout their lifetimes. Ed was a DDGM (District Deputy Grand Master) for District 6 of Missouri Masons. Vida was the Grand Matron of the Eastern Star in Missouri in 1935. Ed was also an active Democratic Party member, elected to a number of minor roles. On January 14, 1910 he was baptized at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Maryville. Ed and Vida often entertained at their home at 501 E 7th Street. When it was burnt to the ground by a tragic fire in October 1917, they moved to a home at 411 E. 6th Street where Ed remained until the end of his life. After moving from the paternal farm, he engaged in different business affairs and at one point was elected the secretary of the People's Telephone Co. Most of his professional life was spent as an insurance agent in Nodaway County. Throughout his life, he signed all papers with the surname "Hamlin" as his father had done before him.
