Description	:	Edwin Howich Buxton was born in Somersetshire, England October 31, 1836 and died at Deep River, Iowa Feb. 20 1915 age 78 years. At age of 18 he enlisted in the Grenadier regiment of the Foot Guards, his term of service extending over a period of 12 years or from Nov. 1854 to April 1866. During that time he served with distinguished honor with his regiment in the East and was present at the siege of Sevattopol during the Crimean war and witnessed the famous but awfully fatal charge of the Light Brigade. At age of 18 he enlisted in the Grenadier regiment of the Foot Guards, his term of service extending over a period of 12 years or from Nov. 1854 to April 1866. During that time he served with distinguished honor with his regiment in the East and was present at the siege of Sevattopol during the Crimean war and witnessed the famous but awfully fatal charge of the Light Brigade. For distinguished services in this campaign, he was awarded a Crimean, a Sebastopol and a Turkish medal, all of which were stolen from him while stopping at a hotel in Detroit, Michigan soon after coming to America. By virtue of his distinguished service, he was promoted to the office of Drill Sergeant and as a consequence was relieved of much of the routine of regular army life and had the honor of giving the then Prince of Wales, who afterward became King Edward, the principal part of his early military training. At the expiration of his term of service in the British Army he was united in marriage with Miss Ellen Sedgwick of London, and they sailed for America where his parents, brothers and sisters had preceded him. One child (now Mrs. Hall) blessed this union, the mother dying at the birth of the child. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army = 22nd Mich. Infantry. Served til end of war and mustered out as corporal. In 1867 he was united in marriage with Mary S. Elder of Fremont, Ohio. To this union six children were born, three dying in infancy. He came to iowa in 1876. He was postmaster under President Harrison. Citizenship papers 1868 virtue of military service. Correction to Obituary. He enlisted in the army before 18 then at 18 enlisted for ten year period. He was in the Grenadier Guards and was not in Crimean war until England became so hard pressed for soldiers it was necessary to send the Grenadier Guards. The Grenadier Guards were very high ranking soldiers. All members were of uniform height, etc. Service in England Queen's "Victoria" personal Grenadier Guard when they were called to help during the Crimean War and was present at the "Charge of the Light Brigade".
