Description	:	Edwin Schmalz Rites Held Here November 27 Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 27 for Edwin L. Schmalz, 65, who passed away at Lundberg Memorial Hospital on November 23. The Rev. Bernard Gorentz officiated at the services held at Hengstler's Chapel and at Christ Lutheran Church at Bazile Mills. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were LeRoy McKown, Clarence Mecke, Ben McGee, Wm. Schellen Jr., Wm. Meikle and Dwain Ewald. Schmalz was born Nov. 4, 1892 at Burr, the son of Herman and Louise Horstmann Schmalz. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church at Burr on March 19, 1893. He spent his early childhood in Otoe and Thayer counties, coming to the Creighton community in 1906. He was confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church, Bazile Mills on March 24, 1907. On Sept. 26, 1923 he was married to Theresa Reiners at St. Mark's Lutheran Church at Bloomfield. two daughter were born to them, both of whom survive. They are Mrs. Wm H. (Lorraine) Osterberg of Lincoln and Marilyn of Watertown, Wis. Mr. Schmalz was a lifelong farmer and operated a farm in partnership with his brother, Herman. He served in the 101st Infantry Division during WWI. He was wounded on Oct. 23, 1918 in the Argonne Forest offensive in France. He was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church and American Legion. He served on the school board and election board in his community for several years. Preceding him in death were his parents and two sister, Louise, who died in infancy and Mrs. Alma Scheer. Surviving are his wife and two daughters; a brother, Herman of Creighton; three sisters, Olga of and Mrs. Percy (Martha) Woodward of New York City and Mrs. Claud ( Clara) Hart of Creighton and two grandchildren.
