"Dubbs" Roush, founder of Roush Honda, died at his home in Westerville on Wednesday afternoon. He was 89. Raised on a farm near Gahanna, Roush graduated from what was then Otterbein College and played professional football in Detroit for a year before creating a small hardware store in Westerville. He began selling Honda motorcycles out of the shop in the '60s, but later shifted the focus to cars and moved Roush Honda to its current location on Schrock Road. That successful business led to a used-car branch and sporting-goods store, which are still open along with the original hardware store. Soon after starting his first shop, Roush formed a club with other Otterbein athletic alumni who wanted to support the school. Called the "O" club, it grew into a nonprofit group that helps pay for uniforms, scholarships and facilities, including the $3.2 million Memorial Stadium. Those who knew Roush remember him as a generous community leader whose laugh filled the room, but who had the no-nonsense attitude of someone who pulled himself up by the bootstraps. "He had this crushing handshake that when he shook your hand, you felt it, but yet he had a gentle way about himself," said Bob Gatti, Otterbein's vice president of student affairs. Roush served on his alma mater's board of directors beginning in the late '60s, and a building was named in his family's honor in 1992 after he donated $2 million. He is survived by his wife, Marilou, two sons and three daughters. A memorial service was still being arranged yesterday afternoon. Arrangements are being handled by Moreland Funeral Home, Westerville. Columbus Dispatch June 10, 2011.
