Ed played football for Butte High School and Billings Senior High. Dad attended and played football for University of Montana. Ed was born April 16, 1916, to Edwin Norton Halland and Minnie Gynell (Johns) Halland in Butte, Mont. Ed played football for Butte High School and Billings Senior High. Dad attended and played football for University of Montana. During World War II, Dad worked for Douglas Aircraft (McDonald-Douglas) in Abadan, Iran. We were raised hearing about Dad's experiences in the Middle East and listening to Russian Cossack music. Dad was honorably discharged from the Army Air Corps in 1946. Ed met Ruth Frank in Denver during the war. After being discharged, Ed worked for the U.S. Forest Service. Dad, Mother and their first baby daughter, Trish, lived in a cabin outside Cooke City. He then worked for General Electric Supply Company for over 30 years as an over-the-road salesman in the Wyoming Basin, living here in Billings and then in Missoula. Five other children were born in the next nine years (1948-1955) while Mother and Dad lived in Billings: Cheryl, Eddie, Kenton, Tim and Tanya. Ed worked for Consolidated Electric and City Electric in Missoula after retiring from GE. Dad was always a very active person. Mother and Dad bought a cabin with no running water or electricity up the West Fork outside Red Lodge in the early ‘50s. Summers and weekends were spent at The Cabin. In the winter, we skied with Dad at "the first Red Lodge Mountain." After the move to Missoula, the Halland family water-skied, camped at Seeley Lake and skied at Snow Bowl. Dad played handball and skied into his mid-80s. He took care of our invalid Mother for 10 years until seven years ago when she left us. Dad lived by himself in Missoula until September 2012. Family and friends who preceded Ed are his mother and father; his younger brother Dickie, who died as a small boy; his younger brother David and his wife, Eunice; his younger sister, Betty, and her husband (Bill Taylen); his son-in-law, Bill Kenney; his niece, Heidi Halland Carlstrom; his skiing buddy, Walt Parock; his childhood friend from Butte, Tom McDonald; and many relatives. Ed is survived by his six children, nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren: Tricia Kenney (Bill-deceased) of Billings and their two children, Bill (Heidy) Kenney of Zurich, Switzerland, Amy (Greg Pang) and their two children David and Mei Lin of Longview, Wash.; Cheryl of Missoula, Mont.; Eddie (Annie) Halland of Bridger, Mont., and their three daughters, Eva (Steve Schiffer) and their four children Nancy, Joey, Dan and David of Boise, Idaho, Becky Halland of Eugene, Ore., and Grace Halland and her two children Ella and Frankie of Entebbe, Uganda; Kenton (Nancy) Halland of Missoula and their two daughters Jennifer (Joe) Nogle and their two daughters, Aubrey and Taylor of Lolo, Mont., and Christine and Sean Rabe of Missoula and their baby due in February; Tim Halland of Red Lodge, Mont., and his two boys, Nathan Halland of Sacramento, Calif., and Erik Halland of Billings and his two girls, Ava and Brielle; and Tanya (Mike Wheeler) of Laurel. Ed also leaves his good friends Maury Gay and Norm Garrick and many nieces and nephews. Our family would like to thank these wonderful, caring CNAs at Billings Rehab who took such loving care of our father: AJ, Courtney, Dawn, Eddie, Kathleen, Mahir, Marie and Dad's special CNA, "Angel Lisa." We are so grateful for the Billings Rehab nursing staff: Joan, Joanna, Kelly, Linda, Lisa and Michelle, the physical therapy staff and the entire staff at Billings Rehab and Rocky Mountain Health Care. We would also like to thank Clyde and Tender Nest who tried so hard to accommodate Dad when we thought he would be able to go to assisted living. Cremation has taken place. A military service will be held here in Billings at a later date, while a Christian service will be held at a later date in Missoula. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
