Western Township Cemetery Mr. Jordan is a native son of Illinois, his birth occurring in Mercer county, June 11, 1842. His parents were Captain John A. and Rachel Jordan, natives of Maine and Coshocton, Ohio, respectively. The paternal grandfather, Robert Jordan, was also born in the old Pine Tree state, and in 1833 emigrated to Ohio, where he died in middle life, two weeks after his arrival. Of his fourteen children seven of them became seafaring men. The Jordan family was originally from Ireland, and was founded in this country sometime during the seventeenth century. Peter Metzler, the maternal grandfather of our subject, was a native of Pennsylvania, and of German descent. By trade he was a millwright, but after coming to Richland Grove, Illinois, in 1836, he followed farming until his death in 1875, when eighty-five years of age. John A. Jordan, with his twin brother, Thomas J., came to Mercer county, Illinois, November 9, 1839, locating at Richland Grove, where he was married and all of his children were born—Byron, of this review; Edwin T., now a resident of Montezuma, Iowa; William H., a government clerk living in Rock Island, and Olive M., who died at the age of seventeen years while at Abingdon, Illinois. In the spring of 1856 the father sold his farm of one hundred and sixty acres in Mercer county, and came to Rock Island county, where he purchased a like amount in Rural township, then called Coal Valley.
