Edythe Mary (May) Slinger was born October 18, 1910 on a farm near Granville, Iowa. Her parents were Albert Slinger and Johanna Bult Slinger and her Aunt Mary Bult joined their household in Edythe's youth to help during her mother's prolonged illness. All have preceeded her in death. Edythe graduated from Maurice High School as valedictorian and went on to work for 26 years as cashier at the Hawarden Penny's Store prior to its closing. She then launched a second career as bookkeeper at Sioux Empire College in Hawarden where she worked until it, too, closed. Her obvious intelligence and durability were exceeded only in her kindness to others, a fact to which all that have known her will attest. An avid reader, a talented seamstress, and a frustrated poet, she devoted her life caring for those close to her. In her early adulthood she helped her sister, first by sewing her wedding ensemble, and then helped care for her sister's children during the difficult years including and immediately following WWII. In later life she cared for her father and Aunt Mary until they passed away. Edythe was active in her local church, St. Mary's of Hawarden. She sang in the choir and held various offices in DCCW. She was also part of a large extended family with many aunts, uncles and cousins located, initally, in Northwestern Iowa, Southwestern Minnesota, and Eastern South Dakota and they gathered in large family groups for many years. She formed long term friendships with many in Hawarden and is remembered fondly by them. Edythe is survived by her sister Rose Mary Slinger Koob, now of Greeley, Colorado; her nephew Bob Koob of San Luis Obispo, CA; her nieces Carol Koob Schlimgen of Parkston, SD and Ft. Myers, FL and Collette Koob Tibbens of Evans, CO and their families.
