Of course it did not occupy a very large place in the affairs of the community, for it was only a little baby, just a tiny little dreamer feeling its way along in the mysteries of life. It could not express the wonders that possessed its little soul. It could not voice the wants and woes of its dainty little body. It was so helpless as to need the constant care of devoted motherhood. To the world in general such little helpless midget of humanity does not amount to much, but in the few weeks of its precious life it had secured so firm a hold upon the heartstrings of one man and one woman as to make its loss a terrible affliction. It was their only child, for God had taken their first born at a very tender age. The dread gloom of that early loss was in a measure rolled back when Effie came to brighten the home. Now that the hopes centered in her have been utterly blasted their world is bleak indeed. But in there dark hours these devoted parents cannot wish the little lives had never been. Cruel as is their bereavement they are yet indebted for the sweet solace of the happy months they lived, and for the closer union between them because of their blessed dead. *The Spirit Lake Beacon, June 16, 1899. ---------
