Page, then of Elkhart, KS, and later of Dodge City, KS, Effie was welcomed to her heavenly home December 18, 2013. Effie’s early life was spent on her father’s sheep farm, which was lost during the Great Dust Bowl. Page, then of Elkhart, KS, and later of Dodge City, KS, Effie was welcomed to her heavenly home December 18, 2013. Effie’s early life was spent on her father’s sheep farm, which was lost during the Great Dust Bowl. The family moved “into town” and set up housekeeping at 707 Avenue D, Dodge City, where her mother lived until she passed in 1994. Effie’s mother, Erma, four sisters and their mother crossed Kansas in a covered wagon to join their father in Elkhart, which was not much of a town at the time, where he had gone ahead and set up a blacksmith shop. Their first home there was cut into the side of a hill, and had dirt floors. Effie attended Dodge City High School, where she played cello in the orchestra, but left at age fifteen to help pay the family’s bills, as her father was very ill, probably from the effects of the Dust Bowl. Effie’s first job was as a “soda jerk” at the A. L. Duckwall’s Five and Dime, where she met Assistant Manager, Dale LeRoy Issitt of Abilene, a WWII veteran (EAME), whom she married January 17, 1948. After Duckwall’s, the couple lived on a farm and Dale milked cows. Effie could not drive. She tried raising baby chicks, but they all died huddling too close to the heater. Effie moved back to town when Dalene was born because their farmhouse was too cold for a baby. The couple had three children in rapid succession, and Dale joined Southwestern Bell as a Coin Collector. They lived near Garden City, then in Dodge City, Liberal, Hutchinson and Topeka through transfers by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as Dale moved up in the organization. Dale passed in 1969. Effie was married briefly to Eldon Johnson and lived in Tucson. Effie moved back to Topeka, where she lived until she relocated to Houston/Kingwood, TX in 1982, living there until she had a stroke in February 2011. Son, Raymond Dean, and his wife, Margaret “Peggy” have been chief caretakers for Effie since her stroke, visiting nearly every day to see her as she enjoyed her last years with friends Violet, Joe, Mary Helen, and so many others too numerous to mention, at Trisun Coastal Palms, Portland, TX. After earning a GED, Effie worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield-Kansas, then Payless Cashways/Furrows for nearly thirty years, then Ace Hardware. She was an expert plumbing and electrical consultant. Effie kept all Dale’s wood working tools, turning out many fun pieces. She was an avid reader, seamstress, crocheter, and collected dishes and cups of various styles. She was curious about everything in life, very creative, and always had two to three projects going. She was an immaculate housekeeper and home administrator. Effie kept every sales receipt, and every check she ever wrote. She gave loving care to her possessions, and was always grateful for everything she had. She dearly loved her sisters, their families, her family, her home, and her neighbors in Sherwood Trails, Kingwood. She especially loved traveling with her family. Effie is survived by daughters, Dalene LaRey Issitt Noakes Buhl and husband John of Dallas, Barbara Jean Issitt Worthington Bishop and husband Charles, Jr. of Tucson, and son, Raymond Dean Issitt and wife Margaret “Peggy” of Ingleside, TX. Effie is also survived by six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Joy Johnson and husband Clyde of Sun City, AZ, Jean Moore of Queen Creek, AZ, Lois and husband Owen Abbey of Richland, WA, Lila Buckley of Barstow, CA, and Betty McElroy of Grand Junction, CO; brother Vernon and wife Laura of Dodge City, and numerous nieces and nephews.
