Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, at Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2659 Kennedy Road, where a scripture wake service will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Eileen was born March 7, 1916, in Fillmore, IA, the third youngest of eight children of Nicholas and Margaret Knepper. She graduated from the Academy of the Visitation in Dubuque in 1935, and on Oct. 7, 1939, she married Nicholas Koster of Cascade, IA, who was serving as a machinist's mate in the U.S. Navy in California, eventually stationed in Honolulu, HI. On Dec. 7, 1941, Eileen and her young son, Bill, were awaiting the return of Nicholas from submarine patrol in the Pacific. She had vivid memories of that fateful day when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, but, though often urged, she was reluctant to record those recollections. But in a letter to her in-laws written Dec. 18, 1941, she described the blackouts, rationing and other hardships endured by Navy personnel and their families after the attack and reported that plans were being made for evacuating dependents. "I don't want to leave here and hope I won't have to," she said. "I feel that as long as I stay here I'll be able to see Nic at least once in a while, and that's what I want more than all the ‘safety' I'd have back in the states." The Navy did require dependents to leave the island, but eventually the family was relocated to Janesville, WI, while Nic worked on construction of motors for the submarine USS Scorpion, the boat on which he eventually was lost after it apparently hit a mine at the entrance to the Yellow Sea. After her husband was reported missing in action and a baby daughter had succumbed to pneumonia, Eileen and her son returned to Dubuque in 1945, where she was employed by the Iowa Employment Office, and later General Timber Service and Weber Paper Company. In the early 1950's she started as a legal secretary with the law firm of O'Connor, Thomas, McDermott and Wright. She retired at age 65, returned to work, and again retired at age 70. Her remaining 25-plus years on this earth were filled with golf, travel, family events, volunteering and more golf, plus a few visits to the local casinos. Despite the misfortunes that came her way, she loved life and lived it to the fullest. Upon meeting her, people always marveled at her age because of her youthful appearance, boundless energy and charming personality. Surviving are her son, William (Nancy), of Edina, MN; five grandchildren, Nicholas (Erika), Benjamin (Janelle), Christine, and Katie Koster; and Maggie (Jason) Bittner, Minneapolis; and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Celeste (Bob) Melloy, Albuquerque, NM; and Bette Helling, Dubuque; sister-in-law Virginia Knepper, Cascade; and many cousins, nieces and nephews who were close to her, but too numerous to list. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nicholas Leo Koster; and infant daughter, Sandra.
