Description	:	Eilert was born to Peter T. and Maria (Schmidt) Wumkes. Eilert married Hilkelina Groeneveld on Feb. 6, 1883 in Ackley, IA. 8 children were born to this union; Mame, Heiko E., Peter E,. Mr. and Mrs. Eilert Wumkes, Sr., were among the well known pioneers of this community. The former was born November 27, 1853 at Oldersum, Ostfriesland, Germany and spent his boyhood days there. His parents crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1868, to make their future home in the United States, subsequently settling at Morrison, la. A few years later they moved to Ackley, IA. There he married Hilkelina Groeneveld, February 6, 1883 and they continued to make their residence there a few years. In 1887 they came to Dakota Territory and settled on a farm a few miles northwest of Lennox where they lived three years. He then moved onto his own farm one mile and one-half mile east of Lennox. Mrs. Wumkes—nee Hilkelina Groeneveld—passed away February 26, 1908. She was born February 3, 1859 near Baileyville, IL. Nine children were born to this union, one of whom, a son, died at the age of two years. The eight children surviving include: Heiko E., Mamie, Peter, Mrs. Ed Stoffers, Mrs. Tillie Grayson, Weije, Mrs. William Wildebaur, and Eilert Wumkes, Jr. Also 19 grandchildren. In 1917 Mr. Wumkes, retired from the farm, moving to Lennox where he spent his declining years. On April 26, 1893 he joined the Lennox Presbyterian church and was a member of that congregation until his death. Mr. Wumkes died January 27, 1932, at the age of 78 years and two months.
