Read More	Elaine Barbara (Spencer) Ransom, 87, of Rutland, died June 24, 2012, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center. Surrounded by her family, she passed on into the arms of her savior, Jesus Christ, and to the arms of her beloved husband, Bob, following a brief illness. She was born on August 9, 1924, in Rutland, where she lived all her life, the daughter and second eldest of 10 children of Earle F. and Viola (Laird) Spencer Sr. Elaine was a graduate of the Rutland High School. In her very young years, she was a reliable babysitter for many families because of her "second mother" duties in her own home. She met and fell deeply in love at the age of 15- with a "guitar-playing" farm boy, Robert Ransom of Rutland Town. To Elaine, Bob was handsome, strong, kind, generous, and she found it a "challenge" to let him know she was "interested" in becoming one of his friends. It didn't take too long, six months, with both being 4H members, and the two loved to spend warm evenings at East Pittsford Pond. In 1942, Bob left Rutland and Elaine when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. In between her senior year of school, she visited Bob at Camp Breckenridge, Ky. Bob sent for Elaine on February 14, 1944, Valentine's Day, to come to Camp Rucker, Ala., and be his bride and to love each other eternally. They were married on March 1, 1944, in Chapel #1 at Dothan, Ala. Bob left Elaine in Dothan on Good Friday, April 7, 1944, not to see each other again until Feb. 3, 1946. Elaine and Bob started writing letters to each other in October 1940, to Bob in East Pittsford Road and to Elaine in Rutland, totalling 4,000+ letters at the end on Jan. 29, 1946. Those letters and other memorabilia will be in the Vermont Historical Society archives, as per Elaine's written gift upon her passing. Right out of high school, Elaine was employed at Jones and Lamson in Springfield, Vt., also later at Rutland Fire and Clay and Tampax as an inspector. Elaine and Bob were baptized together Easter Sunday 1941 in the Advent Christian Church, later named Hope Christian Church. Elaine was a 4H leader, Sunday school teacher, member of the choir, as was Bob who played in the church orchestra. She was president of the WHFM (Women's Home Foreign Mission), president of Loyal Workers and clerk of the church. She was also treasurer of the Southeast School PTA, a lunch hour supervisor and assisted with Girl Scouts. Bob and Elaine bought their only home in 1946 in Rutland and it was in their home on Feb. 19, 1999, where Jesus came to take Bob home as Elaine, their two daughters and son-in-law, held her beloved Bob's hands and said a tearful goodbye to a wonderful human being, loving, generous father and a faithful, loving sweetheart to Elaine. Survivors include daughter Maureen Pratt of Wells and her son Frank (Michelle) Homes of Rutland Town; daughter Robin (John) Turner of Rutland and their sons, Rob and fiancée Jess of Rutland and Greg and partner Steve of Brooklyn, N.Y.; six sisters, Sandra (Bud) Smith and Edna Sargent of Rutland, Janice McLaughlin of Mendon, Beverly (Jack) Wood of Chittenden, Nancy (Edgar) Ridlon and Linda (Edward) Fabian, all of West Rutland; a brother, Robert (Lorraine) Spencer of Rutland; sisters-in-law, Veralyn (Louis) Fryzell of Sudbury, Shirley Ransom of Rutland, Mary Ransom of Pittsford and Gen Spencer of North Carolina; several nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Earl Spencer Jr. in December 1982 and Norman "Tony" Spencer in April 2005; sisters-in-law, Laverne Spencer in January 2001 and Rosamond Spencer in October 2005; brothers-in-law, Joseph McLaughlin, Seth Sargeant, David, Charles, Elihu, Joseph and Kenneth Ransom; her son-in-law, Edward Pratt; and a great-nephew, Dane Roberson of Maryland. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, at the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland, where friends may call from 1 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Castleton. Memorial contributions may be made to Mendon Methodist Church, in care of Aldous Funeral Home, 44 North Main St., Rutland, VT 05701.
