Elaine June Kirkland, daughter of George and Eunice (Schultz) Heller, was born June 13, 1934, at Beemer, Nebraska. She attended St. John’s Parochial School until the eighth grade. She helped her father with the milking operation instead of going on to high school. Elaine then met Melvin Kirkland and they were married on September 19, 1954. From this union two children were born, Nancy and Kevin. Elaine and Melvin lived in West Point after they were married. They moved to Wisner on the Dave Griffith farm and from there moved to Pilger to the Harold Chase farm. Elaine and Melvin then moved to Lexington and to North Platte, before moving to Norfolk where they have lived since 2004. Elaine’s hobbies were gardening, ceramics, needlepoint, and canning. In her earlier years she loved to roller skate. Elaine loved to spend time with her family. She was a waitress and bartender, worked at western stores in Norfolk and Lexington, and also at Walmart. Elaine was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1644 Auxiliary. Elaine is survived by her husband, Melvin of Norfolk, Nebraska; daughter, Nancy Carley and Dan Baer of Winside, Nebraska; son Kevin (Shelley) Kirkland of Pender, Nebraska; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Margaret (Russ) Kind of Wisner, Nebraska; brothers-in-law, Donald Kirkland; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Eunice Heller; parents-in-law, Ed and Twilda Kirkland; brothers, Delmar Heller and Gerald (Lois) Heller; brothers-in-law, Marvin Kirkland, Willie Kirkland, and Leland Kirkland; and sister-in-laws, Norma Kirkland, Joy Kirkland.
