Description	:	Elbert Dean Williams, 77, of Menlo passed away December 21, 2010 at his home. Elbert was born January 26, 1933 in Stuart to Sherman and Edith Denning Williams. He grew up on the family farm southeast of Stuart and attended rural grade school. At the age of 15, Elbert started farming with his brother Don. Read More	Elbert Dean Williams, 77, of Menlo passed away December 21, 2010 at his home. Elbert was born January 26, 1933 in Stuart to Sherman and Edith Denning Williams. He grew up on the family farm southeast of Stuart and attended rural grade school. At the age of 15, Elbert started farming with his brother Don. He was united in marriage to Shirley Westphal on June 1, 1952 at the Fairview Church, south of Stuart. Elbert was drafted into the United States Army on June 1, 1953 and took his basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Shortly after basic, Elbert was stationed in Germany where his wife Shirley joined him during his two years duration of active services before being honorably discharged in April of 1955. When a soldier was ending his tour of duty, he was called in before the captain and given a cup of coffee and a donut, which preceded a pep-talk to re-up for extended service. When Elbert's time of duty was nearing its end, Shirley asked him if they had called him in. Elbert's answer was, "No. They knew if they did, they would be wasting their coffee." After Elbert was discharged, he and Shirley returned to the area and purchased a farm southwest of Menlo where one daughter, Marcella Francene, the joy of his life, was born in 1959. Together they farmed and ran a dairy operation until their retirement. Elbert enjoyed the company of children, and many summers he was found encouraging nephews and neighbor kids in learning life skills that became valuable in later days. He was known for his sincere compassion for his neighbors by lending a timely helping hand whenever a need arose. Elbert was a member of the Menlo American Legion Post and a lifetime member of the Farm Bureau Association. He was a devoted member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he enjoyed fellowship with his church family. He enjoyed tootling around the farm on his four-wheeler and spending quality time with his family which now included his grandchildren, Reggie, Justin, and Emily. One of Elbert's favorite quotes when asked how he was doing was "It could be worse" or "I've been better". He is preceded in death by his parents, Sherman and Edith Williams and brothers, Warren (Maxine), Don and Hayden "Bud" Williams. A devoted husband, father, neighbor and friend, Elbert leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 58 years, Shirley of Menlo; daughter, Marcella (Carl) Holland of Dillsboro, Indiana; grandchildren, Reggie Holland of Atlanta, Georgia, Justin (Brooke) Holland of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Emily (Aaron) Schorsch of Louisville, Kentucky; great grandchildren Aidan, Addison and Avery Schorsch of Louisville, Kentucky; sister-in-laws, Shirley J. Williams of Stuart and Sylvia Williams of Stuart, brother-in-law Earl Westphal (Darlene) of Kingman, AZ, and sister in-in-law Beverly (Westphal) Christensen of Loveland, CO, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
