Description	:	Elda Evelyn Chegwidden, 104, passed away at the Good Samaritan Society in Ellsworth, Kansas, August 9, 2019. Elda was born April 6, 1915 on a farm 5 miles west of Sylvan Grove. The farm was purchased in 1894 by her grandfather when he moved his family from Indiana to Kansas. She was baptized April 19, 1915 into the Christian faith at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Sylvan Grove and confirmed April 14, 1929. Read More	Elda Evelyn Chegwidden, 104, passed away at the Good Samaritan Society in Ellsworth, Kansas, August 9, 2019. Elda was born April 6, 1915 on a farm 5 miles west of Sylvan Grove. The farm was purchased in 1894 by her grandfather when he moved his family from Indiana to Kansas. She was baptized April 19, 1915 into the Christian faith at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Sylvan Grove and confirmed April 14, 1929. She received the 1st two years of her elementary education at the Gorge School west of Sylvan Grove. Her remaining school years were at Bethlehem Lutheran School in Sylvan Grove. On October 30, 1935 Elda married Harold Chegwidden. Their marriage was blessed with our children. Elda and her husband lived and worked on a farm until his death November 1960. She moved to Sylvan Grove where she worked different jobs, owned and operated the Home Cafe and worked at Ell-Kan in Ellsworth, Kansas. She was also active in several organization at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and in Lucas and Sylvan communities. Elda loved to sew and made most of the clothes for her children. After retirement she quilted at the church and pieced quilts for each of her children and grandchildren. She also loved her flowers and spent many hours in her garden. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters, one brother and four grandchildren. Survivors include a son and three daughters, 12 grandchildren, 21-great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Visitation was on August 12, 2019 in the Rodrick and Minear Mortuary in Sylvan Grove from 4-7 pm. Funeral service was held Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at 10:30 am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Sylvan Grove, KS. Burial followed at the church cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 308 North Indiana Avenue, Sylvan Grove, Kansas 67481. Rodrick & Minear Funeral Home, Sylvan Grove, was in charge of the arrangements.
