"..In 1775, Hampton Falls contained six hundred inhabitants, and David Knowlton, having married, went to inspect the country. He soon moved his family there. About 1780, and he probably experienced religion for he is found a member of Randall's church for when in 1791, the Free Bapt. church was org. in Pittsfield, David Knowlton was one of the eight original members. He was soon associated in religious work with such men as Randall and Boody, among the ordained preachers, and Isaac Townsend and John Buzzell, among the unordained. He was ordained by Rev's John Buzzell, Benj. Randall, and Joseph Boody, when he was fifty-four years of age. He labored much but ill-health and infirmities compelled him to relinquish his ministry for a time around 1801. However, his son, Ebenezwer was ordained, to assist his father, and soon took the burden of the public ministry. Rev. D. Knowlton was intimate with Randall during his declining years, and together they attended Yearly Meeting at Westport, ME, in Sept. 1807, when Randall presided for the last time. Elder Knowlton was a man of large hospitality royally entertaining a Quarterly Meeting at his own place, filling every bed in the house, and twenty slept on the floor, and as many more slept in the barn. He cared for the church's poor, and took an indigent member into his own family for more than a year and made a place at his own table. Eld. Knowlton was tall and of grave but pleasant countenance. In public address, he spoke sound doctrine with decision and authority, mingled at times with a tenderness and affection peculiarly loving and winning.
