Read More	PIONEER MINISTER ANSWERS SUMMONS Elder Lewis Hubbell, one of the best known ministers of northeastern Iowa, passed away at his home in Manchester early Monday morning, following an illness of several months. A brief service will be held at the family home on New Street at one o’clock Thursday afternoon, following which the body will be taken to Edgewood and funeral services held in the Congregational church. Elder G. E. Cooprider of Mendota, Illinois, and a close personal friend of the family, will have charge of the services. Interment will be made in the Edgewood cemetery. Lewis Hubbell was born in Rutland, Meigs County, Ohio, on December 31, 1839. When a boy fourteen years of age he came west and located at Harvard, Illinois, where he lived until 1860. In 1860 he came to Delaware county for the first time, and remained only a short time. In 1861 he returned to Delaware county to remain. During the winter months he taught school and in the summer he worked on the farm. On December 14th, 1862, he was united in marriage with Miss Marie L. Gilbert of York. To Mr. and Mrs. Hubbell were born six children, one daughter passing away in early life. The children who survive are B. Hubbell of York, Nebraska; Edward C. Hubbell of Henahga, Minnesota; Mrs. Maude Dorman, Mrs. Grace Dorman, of Manchester; Mrs. Kate Rosenkrans of Clemson College, South Carolina. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Two brothers – A.D. Hubbell of Edgewood and E. C. Hubbell of Beloit, Wisconsin; and two sisters – Mrs. Elizabeth Waite of Hanford, California, and Miss Kate Hubbell , of Harvard, Illinois, also survive. In an early day, Elder Hubbell was the pastor of the Advent Christian church of Manchester, preaching in the school house in North Manchester for three years. While he was the pastor of the Manchester church he also conducted services at Rock Prairie, northeast of Manchester. For eight years he served the Advent church at Richland, as its pastor, and held many positions of trust in the conference of the Advent Christian denomination. For many years he conducted successful evangelistic campaign in the northern part of Iowa. Those were the days before church buildings dotted the norther part of the state and many of these revival gatherings were held under a tent. During the later years of his life, Elder Hubbell was not actively engaged in the ministry, but on very many occasions he occupied the pulpits of the churches in Manchester and Edgewood, during the absence or illness of the local pastors. Elder Hubbell was a man of quiet manner. Those who heard him in the pulpit and who had the pleasure of associating with him in his daily life were at once impressed with the singularity of purpose which prompted every word and deed. He was honored and beloved by everyone who knew him. In his home he was a kind husband and father, and was ever solicitous for the welfare of those who were his own. His death is grievous blow to the wife, who for fifty-five years has traveled life’s pathway with him, sharing with him the joys and sorrows incident to pioneer life in the middle west. At this time of great sorrow the sincere sympathy of a host of friends is extended to Mrs. Hubbell and the sons and daughters, who mourn because of the death of their loved one.
