Eldon VanRenan" -- Eldon Leland Van Renan, son of James and Essie Rector Van Renan, was born April 4, 1906 on a farm near Bartlett in Fremont county. His twin brother, Edwin Leon, died at birth, and his mother survived only 4 days following the birth of the twins. An aunt, Lillie Rector, took Eldon as a baby and raised him to manhood. He grew up in the Pleasant Valley community near Bartlett and attended rural schools in the area. On July 2, 1932, Eldon was united in marriage to Rose Hill of Bartlett at Rock Port, MO. To this union four children were born: Mrs. Joann Poort of Malvern, James of Nebraska City, Mrs. Ruth Brittain of Plattsmouth, Nebr., and Mrs. Carolyn Givens of Blanchard. While raising his family Eldon resided at Bartlett and was employed by the C. B. & Q. Railroad. He was active in community affairs, serving on the Bartlett school board for several years. In 1957 he and his family moved to Hamburg, where he continued to work for the railroad until his health failed. Eldon retired in 1963 after 22 years of service. While in Hamburg he continued to be interested in community affairs and served one term on the city council. On April 25, 1971, he was baptized into the Presbyterian church of Hamburg.
