Description	:	Eldred "Jan" Osten, 78, of Columbus, died Sunday, April 1, 2012, at the Golden LivingCenter in Columbus. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 19, 2012, at the Gass Haney Funeral Home with Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will follow in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery (12.5 miles north). Following the committal service, family and friends will gather at Alices' in Creston for a time of food and fellowship. Eldred "Jan" Osten, was born on the family farm Sept. 7, 1933, in rural Platte County, to Hugo and Lillian (Leffers) Osten. Jan was the oldest of three children and attended District 49 grade school. She attended St. John's Lutheran School and graduated from Creston High School in 1951. She worked at Schweser's, Central Nebraska Bank, and also at Behlens. She moved to Denver, Colo., in 1961 where she went to work for the Denver-Chicago Trucking Co. as a typist. In 1966, Jan moved to Los Angeles and went to work for Texaco and later the LA Times. She did volunteer work for many years at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, planning fundraisers and receptions. She moved back to Columbus in June 1996. Jan worked at the Nebraska Workforce Development for a short time before starting at the Columbus Public Library where she worked until retiring in 2011. Jan was very active in and supported many organizations. She was a staunch Democrat, volunteering much time to the party. She received a state Democratic Party award for her volunteerism. She was an avid reader and kept up on current news. She enjoyed planning get-togethers, whether for cousins, friends, class reunions or politics. Jan had a style all her own. She loved scarves, hats, big bags or any unusual, exotic accessories. Jan is survived by: brother: Roger Osten of Colorado Springs, Colo., sister: Donna Bridgewater of Bandera, Texas, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Jan was preceded in death by: Parents: Hugo and Lillian Osten.
